    Hi guys

I ordered M17XR3 from the ebay (refurbished) and I have a problem with a cpu .
So the problem is the cpu running only on 800mhz (multiplier is 8) and no matter what I set in the bios is running only on that.
I got very low WEI because of this (4.6 for the cpu). I tried bios update , windows reinstall, different bios settings.

    What could be the problem?

What about if you use ThrottleStop and force it to run at higher multiplier ?

I rebooted the system and I have the same problem, multiplier is 8 only.
But If I start TS than it goes back to normal even If I close the program.

The laptop arrived today , I opened and checked everything ok with it and I realized something wrong because of the low wei index. Than I installed my ssd and did a fresh install but the problem remains
It`s strange because after I use TS everything goes back to normal till reboot.

biggest problem is its only running at 8x100mhz not even 2000mhz
i tried to find solution on the net but no one had this problem before, looks like the multiplier doesn't works until I start throttlestop .

I dont have an M17xR3 yet but someday i will but the same thing happened to me when I first got my M15x and i used my respawn and everything was great after that. All the same crap happened to me too and the only thing that would make it work right was Throttlestop Untill i wiped everything and also set everything back to factory. WAIT A MIN! Doesnt the M17xR3 come with turboboost 2.0 software already installed? Please tell me im right. found it its called Intel® Turbo Boost Technology 2.0

 This seems exactly like one of my m17xR3s that had its motherboard and GPU replaced, and after that the processor was stuck at 797.4mhz and only Throttlestop fixed it until I restarted my computer. http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/584043-r3-2630qm-not-clocking-up.html

I did everything that I was told: reflash the BIOS, check the Intel Speedstep settings and nothing was working. (Except Throttlestop) So I called Alienware and they sent me a replacement m17x and that problem was fixed, but there were alot of scratches on it. (a pic about that is on post 19 on my link)

If your m17x has a warranty on it, try getting a replacement and hopefully they wont give you as many troubles as they give me! :D

    Unfortunately re installs doesn't helped.
I try to figure it out it is a cpu or mobo related problem  if a cpu than I buy 7270qm but if mobo than I have to call dell for warranty.
But how is it possible TS fix the problem permanently ?

    appreciate your helps guys :notworthy:

You could let the Throttlestop run at startup and set it to close it after 5 seconds.
    By adding ExitTime=5 on throttlestop.ini

I don't understand why this is an issue? Intel will throttle back the CPU with a lower multiplier when the CPU is not underload. When you need it, the turbo will pump up the multiplier and you should be at advertised speeds. This is a feature that saves battery life and should extend the life of your CPU (lowering heat of your computer)

his problem is the cpu not clocking up, even at idle you should still see the multi clocking up and down.

The problem is the cpu always running on 800mhz even if I run cpu intensive application.
So the turbo doesn't pump up the multiplier always stays on 8x.

This seems to be a common problem in a variety of laptops and I have no idea why. ThrottleStop over writes the value of 8 that is in the multiplier request register. It puts the proper value in that register and after that's done, you can exit ThrottleStop, Turbo Boost will be working correctly and everything will be OK. It seems like a bios bug to me. Have you updated to the latest bios? If your laptop is under warranty then call Dell and tell them to fix it.

Thanks for your reply, yes i tried to update bios several times (went back to original than update again ).
    I'll call dell tomorrow.
Seems kind of software bug if TS can fix it .

    Unclewebb,

What's the effect if my CPU is running fine but I still keep the Throttle Stop ON all the time at Turbo Multiplier set.... ??

They replaced mobo and cpu and it works as it should.
And they send 2720 instead of 2630 , the tech was pro it took an hour to finish the process .
    So I'm happy now :D
