try page 80 , http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/Alw_M17xR3/en/mm/mm_en.pdf
not sure if this is what u need. -
I believe ports 0 an 1 are SATAIII 6Gb ports.
-
You believe correctly.
-
Ill give out a try today and will post if it works page 112 had the tech specs I was lookin for

Im installing the OS now, but i have some questions, does it matter if i keep it as raid or should i go ahci? dont know the difference... my second drive that i also bought was a 500gb ssd hybrid, my main drive is a 64gb ssd sata III,
-
if you leave it as raid you will only be able to access the SSD. if that's ok with you then no, it does not matter.
-
thxs, for some reason my os install failed so i just changed it to AHCI
-
Are these the ports that the "new" R3's are supposed to fix? I keep getting confused between sata 3/III and sata 3gb.
Please advise, thx! -
The interfaces support sata II (3gb)and sate III (6gb) on the R3
-
i just installed the OS and started upgrading.... 64gb.... TOO SMALL =/ might have to return it tomorrow and get a 128 ssd
-
And which ones were the ones that were supposed to be repaired in the revised mobo? 3gb or the 6gb ones?
-
The 3gb (sata II) ports are the ones affected by the faulty SB chipset in the pre-recall R3s. The 2 HDD ports are both sata III 6gb/s and are not effected according to intel. The DVD / Blu-ray drive and external Sata (I think) were affected in the pre-recall versions.
-
Thank you kindly for the clarification.
-
+1 Thanks for sharing.
-
But the OS only takes a bit of that 64gb, right? What's taking up so much space?
-
I just got the m17x R3 and I was talking to dell online support and asked them directly if the mx17 R3 supports sata III and this is there answer.
Agent (Joanna B): "I'm able to check your order and it shows here that you got the M17x R3 with the 2nd Gen Intel processor, this can handle the SATA II."
chris: "not sata 3"
Agent (Joanna B): "No
"
chris: "i already have a sata 3 ssd"
chris: "i would like to use it"
Agent (Joanna B): "I understand however the system will only work with SATA II."
my question is are they right? i tried with 3 different agents they all said the same thing sata II only -
m17x-r3 uses the HM67 chipset (cougar point)
source: Intel HM67 Express Chipset - Overview
I believe it was Dane that posted a pic showing ports 0 & 1 (hdd ports) as SATA III
edit: also the r3 specs say...

Some of them are clueless and quick to shut you down... I had a sata III installed got it to work fine, but its still new and buggy...
-
Im waiting for a more reliable sata III and the price to fall a lil before I go for round two
-
I installed the OCZ Vertex 3 on my laptop today but it says its SATA 2 (3GB/s) in intels rapid storage technology program. How do I "make it" SATA 3?
-
Move it to port 1, that's the bay that's in the middle of the computer. Then adjust your boot order in the BIOS. Haven't seen anyone get 6 Gbps on port 0. It's not a Vertex thing, its happening with Intel drives too. Seems to be an issue with M17xR3.
-
From my understanding, slot 1 for sata 3.
-
I've got my C300 in port 0, and IRST is showing 6 gb/s.
-
Maybe the newer models have sata 3 on both bays.
-
I just recieved mine on 4/14...not too much older than Jestare.
-
I just got my laptop 2 days ago though! order it from dell on April 15th.
I tried it in slot 1 and it does actually show it as SATA 3 (6GB/s) now. Seems like their is something wrong with the other slot. -
Yep M17X R3 is Chipset 6 series aka Sandy Bridge aka 2 x SATA 3 ports
-
I guess it's a 50/50 chance of getting 2 sata 3 slots or one.
-
All of the 6 series chipsets have 2 x SATA 3 according to wikipedia

This is NOT true. Both port 0 and 1 are sata 6gb/s. Specs shows that, and my experience shows that too.
I tried both vertex 3 and intel 510, both shows sata 6gb/s in crystal disk info and Intel RST.
Ruderthanyou, I suggest you reinstall the drive to port 0 and restart once or twice, u'll see. You are making some people think port 0 is not capable of sata 3, which I believe is not true.
Of course u dont have to do this, lol
-
I'll try it again. This fix was suggested to me and I read it in numerous posts suggesting the same thing. I not the only person who experienced the problem. Don't have any issues with taking your advice...after all thats what these message boards are for. Would love to be proven wrong as I'm aware that the HM67 chipset is suppose to have 2x 6Gbps ports.
-
Swapped my drives, put the Vertex into Port 0, and not getting 6Gbps. Did about 5 reboots and RST still shows 3Gbps everytime. Got a score of 534 in AS SSD, verses 700 when its in 6Gbps mode.
Don't know, maybe its my machine. Probably time to call Dell tech support on this issue too.
I don't want to pull my C300 out of my ASUS to do more testing, but might be necessary in this case. -
Very strange.
Right after install windows and all drivers, I run as ssd and got very low sequential speed. I checked and it shows SATA 3GB/s
I restart, load bios set up as default, then make changes again (RAID to AHCI, overclocked for RAM, etc. ) and restart.
Now it shows SATA 6GB/s. However my as ssd score right now is extremely low (got 3.5 MB/s for 4k random write) I think because I've just writen 250GB on it in 3 hours - will need sometime for it to do TRIM. I will re-run the benchmarks tomorrow and compare with my vertex 3. -
So what's the verdict? Do our R3s have Sata 6gb (aka SataIII aka Sata 3)?
-
Sort of. Slot 1 has SATA 3 working right off the bat. No restarting a few times or anything like that needed. Slot 0 though is not working. I tried everything I know of to get it to work and nothing.
-
Seems like it's hit or miss for some people. I had sata 3 working immediately, but it seems like many here are having problems with it.
-
I don't get it. Shouldn't this have been solved with the end of the Intel Fiasco?????
-
The SATA 3 ports was not affected by the Sandy Bridge problems. The SATA 2 ports however were. And they did not fail immediately, but degrade over years until it lost its communication with the drive connected to the SATA 2 ports
-
Could it be the interposer causing the issue with it reverting to sata2?
-
Not for me, I use the same interposer on my Vertex 3 whether its on port 0 or 1. Never get 6 Gbps on 0, always on 1.
-
I feel fortunate that for me it is a non issue as I am only using one SATA III drive and one SATA II drive. Although, if you guys figure it out, I would love to understand the cause as well. Keep us all up to date ...
-
i have a brand new M17x R3...LOVE IT. Awesome all around except having this annoying sata 3gb issue.
have a crucial m4 installed in port 1 (as people suggested) but still showing up as sata 2 rather than 3.
tried originally at port 0 but no luck.
anybody get a fix?
as of yet have not installed the RST drivers
M17xR3 support sata 3?
