    Since a few days my machine is crashing on me when using the gtx 580m. On Counterstrike, Windows Experience Index test, Heaven and 3dMark 06 benchmark. When I play Counterstrike with the Intel HD 3000 there is never a problem.

    Also everything is stock, so no overclocking of gpu, cpu, mem, ...

    WhoCrashed:

    crash dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\060113-12948-01.dmp
    This was probably caused by the following module: nvkflt.sys (nvkflt+0x31704)
    Bugcheck code: 0x116 (0xFFFFFA800615C010, 0xFFFFF88004482704, 0xFFFFFFFFC000009A, 0x4)
    Error: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR
    Bug check description: This indicates that an attempt to reset the display driver and recover from a timeout failed.
    A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: nvkflt.sys .
    Google query: nvkflt.sys VIDEO_TDR_ERROR

    Troubleshooting so far:

    1. installed previous nvidia driver 314.22 with clean option
    -> crash happens in game
    2. updated bios to a12 and gtx 580m firmware v.70.24.2B.00.06, A01 according to Alienware M17x R3 & M18x R1: Bluescreen (BSOD) 0x0000009F DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE | Dell US
    -> crash happens in game
    3. uninstalled nvidia driver + intel grapics driver in safe mode + cleaning up with DriverSweeper
    4. Rebooted and installed intel driver v15.28
    5. Rebooted and installed nvidia driver 320.18
    -> crash happens in game
    6. disabled intel graphics in bios, so only nvidia is the primary card
    -> crash happens in game
    7. Ran Heaven benchmark full screen
    -> crash after approx. 1 hour. max temp gpu 70 celcius. cpu 53 celcius
    8. Restored clean win7 image through Acronis and installed latest win updates
    9. Re-seated the nvidia card
    -> Heaven benchmark OK after 3 hours. Ran Counterstrike GO and crash after half hour.
    10. Installed latest certificed nvidia driver from dell.com -> v.269.03, A01
    -> crash happens in game

    Last but not least:
    11. I removed the ssd, which I installed 6 months ago with no problems and installed the original hard drive. Used the original Win7 installation dvd and did a clean install. Installed latest certificed nvidia driver from dell.com -> v.269.03, A01 and used the Heaven benchmark again. After a few minutes black screen crash...

    Running the game with Intel hd 3000 never gives problems.
    nvidia drivers are always clean installs
    Whenever I disable the hd3000 an run dedicated gtx580 the crash is a black screen

    I really start to supect a serious problem with the gtx 580m...

    I believe the video card needs to be replaced, you have done pretty much all the troubleshooting we recommend to fix it. But here is a link to a couple more steps that can be performed to try to fix it.

    Hi Luis,

    Thanks for your response. I tried the stuff on the link, but unfortunately no success... I send an email to [email protected], as you requested in the other forum.

    Had the same problem with my R3, a new motherboard and video card fixed the issue. Good luck.

    My 580m, which was flashed to a 675m and worked perfectly for a few months, also died more-or-less in this fashion. I think it was the same BSOD error

    I have had the same experience over the last period - week.
    I have done troubleshooting as listed, and used the Alienware spy to analyse BSOD faults. ....0X116..
    And did dianostic check from bootscreen to see if I could find faulty hardware... No luck.
    I did reinstall OS from original cds and drivers... No luck.

    I have read about upgrading the gfx card to the AMD 7970. So I wonder if the solution is to buy that as a replacement and follow the guide listed in the forum? Any thoughts?
    Is power an issue with 7970 ( using the 240W today)?
    Is heat a problem? or will a new heatsink do the trick.

    If I go down this road. Any pointers on where to buy the card and a new heatsink since I am living in Denmark.

    Thank you for a great forum.

    Hi.
    It is your post regarding the guide that let me to the option. :D
    There is just some basic elements of the error that concerns me.
    - is it only the gfx that is broke?
    - Do I need a new heatsink?
    - Can it handle the heat?
    - Do I need other power unit?

    Nginge, i can only answer the bottom three questions with certainty

    1) I don't know if the gfx card is the only issue. It appears that way. Normally, if you call dell for service (if you're under warranty), their techs aren't that knowledgable. So they just replace everything. This normally means a motherboard and gfx card. However, I can't tell you for sure if its just the graphics card. best case is to borrow a card and try it out.

    2) you will need a need heatsink...if you go through my guide, someone lists the part number which Dell surprisingly sells really cheap
    3) the 7970m runs cold. you don't have to worry about heat compared to your 580.
    4) You don't need another power brick. The 240w unit that came with your laptop is more than sufficient.

    Thank you so much for the information.
    I think i'll try t find a 7970 and a heatsink using the guide and see if it helps.
    Any ideers of where it is best to buy?

    Is there any other thing that would be a good upgrade fro a machine i have:
    | i7-2670QM | 8gb ram | 120gb SSD + 750gb hd | Killer Wireless 1103 |

    Hi I'm brand new to this forum.. This is my most recent issue as well.
    This first started playing Planetside 2 late june for a while and suddenly my computer just shuts off possibly because my card overheated. But It turn on when I press the power switch.The fans insantly kicks in then boots like it should but When I start playing a game requiring the Nvida 580M Card, It gives me the same error frequently but the error code it gives me is: Attempt to reset the display driver failed

    What I did was:
    • Reinstalled/unistalled drivers and cleaned installed them completely
    • Use Driver sweeper to clean out registry keys for NIVDA in safe mode
    • Checked using BIOS/hardware check nothing wrong
    • Turn off services( Now this worked for the moment like maybe (40min in game) but then It shutted off again due to overheating and boom back to square one

    Now the only I've haven't done was reinstall the windows software because I think its has something to do with the video card itself and It wouldn't help much.

    As of now I'm just going to give it to a PC repair place nearby and see if they can fix it because my PC is out of warranty (about half a year)

    And I mean I need to pay over $800 for warranty,diagnostics,shipping,replacement parts if I send it to dell so that's my last resort especially if its something simple like replacing a graphics card.

    Right Now Im checking the temps while running alien autopsy to check my Nvida card. Based off of Hwinfo64 max was 82-83 and increasing (I stopped it immediately before it can go any higher and give me a BSOD).

    Anybody have any suggestions at this moment I need to get this repaired for fall semester in college.

    here's my computer info: (for some reason It won't let me get my display driver info :()
