Is it possible to get the 120hz display without the NVIDIA card? The online configuration at alienware.com wouldn't let me do it, would I be able to call in and change my order to that configuration?
I don't really care about 3D I just want the 120hz aspect of the upgrade.
TL;DR [email protected] told me it was possible to both do the 120Hz with 7970M ordered and to replace the part after the fact as well.

Nope. Not yet, at least.
-
That's unfortunate... almost makes me want to go for the nvidia card even though it performs worse and costs more...
Maybe we'll be able to buy the display as a separate part in the future? -
is not yet but the 7970m gives your more than a 120Hz Screen -.- is a very powerfull card the 680m iis goiign to be a kick in the for the performance and the Price... rumors says that the 7970m is going to be more powerfull than the 680m so think about that but well just wait 2 more months and we are goign to see the new 680m

I can't imagine that replacing the screen will be easy at all.
-
It won't work. This question has been asked to death. I will once again iterate: no. For a reason, the search function is your friend.

@Plutonium239. Hi My name is Luis and I work for Alienware, actually yeah you can upgrade your screen later on, you will be able to move to the 120hz one. If you have any further question about our computer's hardware please send us an e-mail to [email protected] and we will reply back to you as soon as possible. #IWork4AW

Has something changed then? It definitely could not be done with the R3.

There was a Samsung Series 7 that had a 6970M and 3D was enabled in it. 3D is a mess on the AMD side though since support is dependent on the laptop manufacturer not on AMD.
-
Not really too concerned with the 3D but man the 120hz looks crisp when you're pulling over 100fps
-
Samsung is releasing a 7970m based system with 120Hz 3D screen, so this must an AW issue not AMD.

its the way the screen connects to the mobo. There is several detailed post through out the forum that explain this in detail, I just can't find one.

not a hater, just I really doubt its possible at this point.
-
Haha I hear ya, I'm working with them to try and order the 120hz display and I'll let you guys know if it works or not

looking forward to seeing what happens. Hope it works.

What if 680m becomes more powerful than 7970...
What if 580m card fails after some time...
What if while replacing the card we ask for 680m which upon release may be more powerful than 7970....
hmmm hmmm hmmm.... I wonder... I wonder.. -
What if this is the last year, and the world does end?

I emailed AWupgrades, I am very interested, if you configure this at the dell site it just says you need to change it in order to complete the order.

Here is the Canadian web link to the product:

I would doubt very much that AMD cannot handle 120Hz. Seems also some AW only 7970 issues have arisen, involving Enduro and their systems. Possibly its all related. -

if thats possible on m17x r4, its possible on m17x r3 as well.
-
What's your rational? Because it isn't and I've tried.
-
probably bios/driver tweak.

No, it's a physical motherboard/video port configuration limitation in the R3.
-
So was anyone able to order this combo?
I never did hear anything back from AWupgrade. -
Any one else hear anything from dell about getting the 120hz screen with the AMD card?

I was curious for any updates on this if anyone has heard back from Dell. I did email a few weeks ago and got no response.
