I have a M17xR4 with a 7970M and currently have an issue where it boots to windows (Using 8.1 64-bit), then briefly flashes the windows login page, and then goes black. I can boot into safe mode, and have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers on my GPU. I also did a system restore which managed to boot regularly but I could not use the 7970M without the same thing happening at startup. Is my GPU cooked or is it possibly a software issue?

Seems to be a trend just lately .

Try removing the GPU/Heatsink (they do come out as a unit - no need to separate). Clean the edge connector with alcohol and blow out the socket with compressed air (if you can). It often fixed a 'missing' GPU.

    Good luck.

Jup this sounds like exactly the same problem another user on this forum had (and we fixed it by reseating the card)
