With both options you will loose 3D. The 680m should be faster.

General opinion is that the 680m with a decent OC is as good if not slightly better than a 780m. Probably in the region of 35% overall faster than a 580m (just going on the many people that have done this).

The 680m is also the most reliable (IMO) NV chip considering how long it has been around. Not seen a single failure :D. The heatsink from the 580m has been used by many 680m users without issue (research the pad layout, there are plenty of pics of this). Make sure you get the x-bracket for whatever GPU you go for - the original may fit but will not (probably) provide the correct pressure/clearance for the heatsink.

You will need a modified .inf file for the driver. Only machine/GPU combinations supported by the OEM are added into the nvidia notebook drivers :(.

Get it from here: LaptopVideo2Go: Drivers

    Good luck

    another newbie question.
if my m17xr3 3d's 580m decided to pack its bags and die could i just purchase the 680 and replace with that or would i need a current oem supported card first?

Nope, any will work and the clevo versions actually overclock easier. You'll loose 3D with any 680m card, but 120hz will work - see my earlier post for more details. The nice thing about the 3D model is that you do not need a modded bios or make any changes to disable the on-board gpu, it's already disabled :D meaning that all you need is a modified driver inf file.

Yeah and it's the 120hz which is the nice part anyway :)
