hi guys just new on this, tried to sign up with tech inferno but wont let new members join.

im trying to upgrade my laptop to 780m from 660m. as far as iam aware i need an unlocked bios a11?
i have the modded driver from eurocom tech, struggling to find somewhere to get the unlocked bios part from tech inferno but cant get in.

any help would be appreciated ive also never tried to do this before and not sure if im even doing it the best way.

That is correct, 980m does not require unlocked BIOS. It should work with A11,12 and 13 and probably even lower official BIOS versions. 780m should not need unlocked BIOS either. I only went from 680m to 980m and might be wrong here. Are you on Windows 10 in full UEFI (legacy disabled)?

i updated to a14, found a modded driver 345.20 on some website and i installed it with digital sig enforcement off, it has installed but the clocks are running at half even when start up games or kombuster, i dont think i have legacy disabled...should i?

It seems 780m does not need legacy/uefi changing, the only requirement should be the modified inf for the driver. I checked the latest inf file from nVidia stock driver and even though they added support for 980m, they did not add it for 780m for some reason. So inf modification will still be required for 780m.

As you upgraded from 660m, I assume your PSU is only 180W. GPU might be underclocking if it does not get enough power. 780m might need 240W PSU (hopefully people, who owned 780m might chime in here). Another reason might be the temperatures. 680m was a direct swap to 980m as the card layout is very similar and heatsink replacement was not required. I might be wrong, but 660m might use a different heatsink. Have a look at the part number on your heatsink, it should be 0MT1DN (see Dell part number).

hi buddy, i have upgraded my psu to the and also i have upgraded the heat sink to the 100w 3 bar one. when i run kombuster on stress it sits nicely at 65 temp, although the clocks still stay half speed.

What OS are you running? And what is your 780m hardware ID from device manager? J95 wrote a guide on how to modify the inf files:
    https://www.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/4055-guide-modding-nvidia-oem-inf-files/

Please use antivirus software or coin miner blocker (like 'No coin' for Firefox/Chrome). It seems they have a coin miner on the website now.

If you are ok with the conductive thermal paste, Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut [73 W/M] is the best option you can get right now. It's easier to apply and works even better than Coolabaratory Liquid Ultra. The paste is metal based and can destroy the components, great care is required when applying it.

hi, hardware id comes up with a few
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_119F&SUBSYS_05801028&REV_A1
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_119F&SUBSYS_05801028
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_119F&CC_030000
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_119F&CC_0300

Please use antivirus software or coin miner blocker (like 'No coin' for Firefox/Chrome). It seems they have a coin miner on the website now.

is that just in case i have a virus or a bit miner on my system?

i would be happy using that if it is better. so i can download the update driver and then follow these instructions to be able to mod it? i'm hopeless at modding lol

It should not throttle, those temps are a bit high I think though. And again, as I never had 780m, those temps might be ok...

svl7 made the mods. I used his version of 680m vbios mod and it was great. The mods raised the clocks a bit by default and the card was very stable for years. I sold it when 980m arrived and 680m still works fine as far as I know.

Random idea from 980m throttling: try enabling hybernation and put the laptop to hybernation once. On the next power up it should no longer throttle.

I think flashing the vbios will be a bit out of my skill set,

I will try the hibernation, on the 6xx series when i put it under hardcore settings it would only ever get to 75 ish so yeah think it is little high.

Would that vbios help though? The gpu fan already kicks in at full speed soon as 3d clocks kick in.
