I got a m290x which replaced my previous card (7870m - dead after 5 years of use) and everything is working fine. Except when I try to run a graphic intensive game, like Prey, Doom, Shadow of Mordor, Crysis 3, etc. Then the gpu will simply crash to desktop. Lighter games will work just fine, like Overwatch, CS:GO, Quake Live, Hearthstone, Diablo 3, even during long sessions (played Overwatch for 3 hours nonstop once with no issues). This did not happen with the 7870m, it would run every game just fine.

Also, the card is not overclocked and, according to the seller, it's a Dell m290x. Any ideas on what's wrong? Maybe mess with the voltage?

what are the temperatures under full load? on max settings? probably it is heating up ...the core itself or some of its components ..mosfets voltage regulators etc...i had the same issue on my 780m ...replaced its pads and undervolted it...now works stable as rock

Temps are actually quite cool (around 50-60 C). Those graphic intensive games crash right when they start. Something I noted is, when I played Crysis 2 it would keep on crashing at the beginning, then I changed the graphical settings from DX11 to DX9 and it worked! I played for almost an hour after that with no crashes. What gives?

50-60 C at max load? i dont think so ...well try updating or reinstalling your graphics driver by first removing the old drivers completely with DDU software and try updating your directX files too.....if that does not work thn there is something wrong with your GPU....well install GPU-Z and enable LOG TO FILE in SENSOR'S tab and turn on the game and when the game crashes again at directx 11 thn post the log file here

Actually, the game does not even load the gpu. The log and a screenshot of the error when trying to run Prey are attached below.

Just for the record, I fully loaded the gpu while playing overwatch for two hours yesterday on Ultra settings and the game did not crash at all. Temps were as high as 65-70 C when I checked GPUZ (was collecting the log too but dunno why it did not save the file after my gaming session). Also for the record, the gpu fans were programmed on hwinfo to spin at 5000 RPM (max speed) when temps are at 70 C and above.

well according to the gpu-z log i cannot see your gpu giving its max output....first of all try to update your DIRECTX because DXGI error seems directX error to me as i have googled it too.... on the other hand check the CPU temperatures too as it might be the culprit

Here`s a log of me playing Overwatch for 10-15 minutes and the GPU load going as high as 100%. Temps top 65 C during gameplay. I`ll try to update my Directx and will post an update later.

were the graphics settings on ULTRA? the highest i mean....according to my guess your m290x is a 4gb gpu right ?i cannot see your game consuming more than 1300mb of vram if you are playing at high graphics...it must consume more than that and stress the vram too so we can see the actual power of this GPU..well...according to this log...it is just running fine according to the temperatures....i asked you to check the CPU temperatures..did you check them ?

They were set to ultra, yes. It is 4GB. Oh, I`ll check the CPU temps later today and will post it here then. I thought of flashing a new vbios, cause I really think this is gpu related. Intel's i7 3610QM CPU worked just fine with my previous 7970M.

I dumped my vbios version using Gpuz and uploaded here. I think it is not updated. Maybe I could use this one? https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/174656/174656

you can try updating your vbios and make sure to make a backup of you original bios at all cost and also make sure that you are also having the dell vendor's m290x ...rest you are good to go :) good luck and keep updating about it here :)

I believe there's something weird with the VBIOS, 'cause it states (on GPUZ) that the device id is 1002 6801, which refers to the m290x, but the subsystem id is 1028 057B, which refers to the 7970m. I searched online for the correct subsystem id that refers to the m290x and it is 1028 05AB.

I downloaded this VBIOS and flashed it using AMD flashing tool under DOS booted from a previously prepared pendrive. Then I could not boot back to windows 10 and was constantly shown a blue screen. So I formatted the SSD and reinstalled W10 then booted up to windows and as soon as I tried to install AMD drivers it would give me the blue screen again. So I flashed my previous backed up VBIOS and was able to install the drivers with no problem but the errors that happened while using heavy games still persisted.

I'm starting to think this is a problem related with an incorrect VBIOS flashed to my GPU. What do you think?

yeah probably incorrect vbios will lead you to this issue...now i am guessing that you are having a 7970m flashed with the name of m290x xD too much confusion

I think it is a 8970m `cause the board is green. My previous 7970m had a blue board. I`m actually considering to get and flash a 7970m with UEFI support onto my 8970m. Think that`s a good idea?

    They are all same. Rebrands with bigger memory. 7970M = 8970M + Memory = R9 M290X

There you go! Flashed UEFI supported 7970M VBIOS ( this one) and now everything works!!! Even those graphic intensive games are working just fine! Just tested Doom and Prey and played 2 hours each! It's funny, my board is still recognized as a 8970M on GPUZ but maybe that VBIOS changed voltage and memory values to the correct ones, I don't know... I'm just glad it's working!

    Thanks for everything!
