So I've read Slickdude's guide, and most of the post following it but I still have a problem. I installed afterburner, edited the config and edited the registry. Now when I start afterburner (newest version) the sliders are on 0 and I can't move them (to overclock). Any ideas?
On Slickdude's guide they should be on 850Mhz for core clock and 1200mhz for memory clock, with lots of room to overclock.

dalorian, in addition to what joe said, double check your msi config file saved as a .cfg file and make sure there are no duplicate cfg files.
the newest afterburner lacks an ati dll file needed for overclocking...you can either add it in manually or download 2.2.1 or 2.2.0 which is what i'm using
i will be updating my guide with this info when i get a minute

Just to add to what slick is saying, if you go to My Computer>Organize>Folder and Search options and clikc on the "view" tab, then deselect the box ticked title "Hide extensions for known file types"
Drag the CFG to your desktop, Right click it, change the name from MSIafterburner. CFG to . txt, edit the text and then reverse the process, rename it from .txt to .cfg. and drag it back to the MSI afterburner install directory. -
Can't find a working version of 2.2.0 or 2.2.1. Can only find Beta versions and they don't work (Always give an error on startup). Anyone able to upload an installer somewhere?

This thread should help:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/680930-overclocking-7970m-msi-afterburner-2-2-3-where-can-i-find-2-2-1-a.html
There is a link to 2.2.0. You can install 2.2.0 and then upgrade to 2.2.3 over the top, and it will work. -

But that's where I got it. Maybe try uninstalling it completely, verify the program folder is deleted, and try to install again? -

Are you on dedicated graphics? Fn+F7. Sounds to me like you're on switchable and AB clocks (aka 7970m) aren't being initiated by any app. Open up a GPUz instance and and see if they're both selectable or look in your Device Manager to see if they're both listed.

i'm on a clevo with the 7970M... i have exactly the same problem ... tried lots of driver versions as well as afterburner versions.
i always put load on the gpu so i'm sure it's active.. still not working :/ -
Same here, didn't manage to make it work.... Sad stuff, guess we gotta wait til MSI releases a working version for 7970m :/

I do also join the club with ppl who can´t get Afterburner to work with the 7970m.
On my R4 I´ve now tried to install ever beta version of 2.2.0 in hope that I´ll get one with the atipdlxx.dll, no luck !
And the 2.2.1 I can´t manage to find a download link for anywhere !
I´ve changed the cfg file, changed the register none will work.
Before I change the cfg file Afterburner shows 850mhz and 1200mhz correctly but I cant change the sliders, then I activate the overclock in the cfg and after that the sliders are all at 0 -
Did you make sure that the cfg file didn't save as a txt file?
I might have version 2.2.1 somewhere. If I can find it, I'll upload it for you. -
-
I got it working a while back and posted a guide in another thread, I'll edit this post and link it when get on my computer
edit: here is the thread -
Awsome ! that link to the 2.2.1 in that post has the dll file in it and it works perfectly now
