So I was all hyped up that the Alienware M17xR3 used magnesium alloy for the case and coated with rubber. (magnesium alloy is rather expensive). But then after doing some more research...it seems the case is actually all plastic with coated rubber? and magnesium alloy is only found in the internals--the keyboard tray and some reinforcing parts? (not that speacial since a lot of notebooks use magnesium alloy for internals) Is this really true?

    Then go for a M18x:
Aluminium chassis anodized to black(gun metal color) or red.

I have contemplated it. It's pretty , but also very expensive--though 6990m in crossfire may be worth it.

I find it much cheaper than what the m17x and M17x R2 used to cost when they were available to order.

the whole centre section is magnesium, then the sides are soft touch plastic (hung off the magnesium), the front and top are soft touch plastic, and the bottom is hard plastic. the lid is soft touch plastic, but has surprisingly little flex for how big it is.

Case quality wise M17x is not better than Sager's. I'd recommend either the older R2 or M18x. As for the price, you can always try negotiating with different reps and get a discount. When I grabbed my M18x with 6970M CF it was 800$ cheaper than a similar config from Sager (X7200).
