So I've been playing Counter strike GO and Depth all week. All of a sudden today any game I try to run play's at 10fps in game or lower. In menu screens I'm at 10-20fps. What on earth happened? I didn't change anything. Restarted my laptop several times. Then did a full shutdown and the problem still persists. I checked my power option and it's set to High Performance. Very strange :S

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

You have the GTX 880M, so I'm assuming it's some form of throttling issue regarding temperature. What are your temperatures?

    He has the Alienware 17 R1 with a 4710MQ & GTX 880M.

P.S. I found your specs by searching through your latest posts/threads. It would be nice if you could just share them straight up next time.

I was having issues with my CPU temps this past week while working so I started using hwinfo to just have my CPU fan running. They were reaching 80c. I didn't notice anything wrong with my GPU though. I will test it right now and watch those temps.

Ok now it's back to normal. What gives? This happened to me once or twice this week. Except all I had to do was relaunch the game to fix it.
I have been doing some intense video editing lately that the laptop can't seem to handle all that well apparently. I had a few random blue screen crashes this week. Anything to do with it?

I'm thinking it may have something to do with HWinfo and messing with the fans? Someone told me to look into what Bios I'm running. Does this make sense to look into?

Sometimes controlling the CPU fan with HWiNFO will stop the GPU fan from running. Try controlling both fans with HWiNFO and see if it runs fine, then run just the CPU fan and see if the GPU fan spins up or just stays off.

The 880M is known for its heat issues, but it could also be a driver issue. I would try a "clean" install. Instead of choosing "express installation" when installing a driver, choose "custom installation" and select "clean install," or whatever it says.

On top of this when was the last time you cleaned the system? You would be amazed how plugged those poor heatsinks can get if you have a dusty house or animals kicking around. I have to tear mine down and clean the heatsink out every few months and they look pretty bad...but my city is very dusty and I have a cat and a dog that shed like crazy. If you try all of this and you still get no difference then it couldn't hurt to back up your files and try a reload of Windows. Are you running dedicated or are you using Optimus? If your using Optimus use FN+F5 and turn on just the 880m and try that.

That actually worries me that there may be an issue with the GPU itself, a failure possibly but we can cross that bridge when everything else fails.

I get between 70 and 75 when I'm playing my games. no throttling issues though because I have a modified driver. You can find it in these forums just type in Mr. Fox's desktop mod and it will come up. I am curious though, when playing a game, does one fan seem to run faster than the other? I get that issue and it is when I am playing Warframe. The primary card tends to have its fan going faster than the second card I have installed on my laptop but the temps tend to be better with it than the other card so I don't know if it is normal for it to have the fan blowing harder because it is the primary and keeping cooler or if it is a bug in my system. Not that it's a bad thing my laptop is keeping cooler just bugs me it's all
