i know this might seem out of place, but unfortunately Dell AU force fed me the 15mo. of Mcafee, despite i am EXTREMLY happy using free'er alternatives, but since i paid for it i may as well use

thing is on the replacement M17, i installed the 6990M 's driver on dell's site and after following the "clean windows installation" and all updates...i am presented with BSODS like anything, infact it gets so bad....that eventually the minute i boot the machine BSOD's....

me just wondering (and comaring 02 latops)

i followed the same resource when i placed the SSD in the older M17xr3 and proceeded to install the mcafee...no issues

but this time (i have the Bigfoot killer-n and the 6990M) .Are these reported to have issues with mcafee

I have 6990s and a Bigfoot 1103 card. I also use McAfee. Havn't had any issues. my guess is its the 6990 drivers. Any idea what the BSOD is? or what codes it's throwing? Have you looked at the dump files?

The newer drivers (11-21-2011) from Bigfoot avoid some issues and conflicts for me. Support. I haven't used McAfee for years, but other forum members have reported a lot of issues which seem to disappear after McAfee is removed.

I agree 110% with both of u,but unfortunately us "poor" folk in Oz have to buy it, and dice it was Internet security that I paid for I thought I should use it, I was quite happy using the MSE and malaware program for my security needs

I personally don't understand what the beef with McAfee is. Seems to run fine for me and isn't really a resource hog. Although normally when I sent it to run, I dont click "scan in background."

lastnight I scanned my brothers SSD/HDD for a computer I gave him (which he's running into the ground :() and McAfee cleared out 2,707 trojans  (I know, rediculous ). But all in all I'm happy with McAfee, I got it with my M17xR1, and when I returned my system and got a full refund, my 4 year McAfee subscription was refunded, but never terminated :D All in all it does the job for me.

Although you can try uninstalling McAfee and see if that helps. At least it's a start to finding the source of your problem.

I used it looooong time ago and it was fine I guess :) yes people seem to hate mcafee for some reason, now I am using what my university provides. 2707 trojans?! should have felt like the computer upgraded after the clean up :)

Yea, Plenty of hatorade out there for McAfee. That said, I use Microsoft Security Essentials on all my other systems since the McAfee license is only good for one system. MSE works well to, I just like all the extra features of McAfee.

Tonight I'll try and boot the system, hopefully it runs well. I really would rather do a fresh install, just so I know eveything is off it, but I really don't want to put in so much effort. What I need to do is do a fresh install and create an image, so nextime I can just reimage the system.

What I'll probably do is go through the installed programs and start removing stuff.

McAfee used to be a resource hog in several versions so it got a bad reputation. Then several big reviews came out with average ratings showing free software doing a better job. So its just a reputation thing. It very well could be very good now but i don't know.

Personally, i use Comodo. It is free and does a better job

I think I have around 1.5 years left with the McAfee subscription, after that not sure which way I'll go. McAfee has been great, and unless you choose otherwise, it will scan in the background using minimum resources. I'll be shopping around for a new program. I like having all the extra stuff. I by no means am a McAfee fanboi, but McAfee is what I've been using, so I'll only have that and MSE to compare to. But I'll wait till my subscription expires and then I'll do some research on whats next.

One thing I like about McAfee,is running virus scans while using throttlestop with it. I can scan my drives entirely and completely and it will make good use of resources, and runs my CPU at a maxed out 90watts, needless to say having all the CPU power at it's hands, it runs the scans quick, at least on the SSDs. I'm sure other programs are the same way, but I figure, if I have all the resources, and power, I may as well make use of it. During the day I have real-time scanning on and running in the background, and in the middle of the night, if I leave my system on, it will run a complete scan of everything once or twice a week.

    EDIT: 6000th post :D

After my Norton ran out I started using Avast! and I haven't had any problems with viruses since. I also run a full scan with Malwarebytes once a month for good measure.

I am very sorry to bump this thread after a yr... But while reading , I came upon an issue, apparently there was a problem between mcafee and Bigfoot software...and the fix came out sometime this year in the 2nd quarter
