It seems that these aren't working properly for me despite looking through setting up microphones and trying to troubleshoot it.

The Array seems like it picks up my voice on tests, although rather quietly, and the normal microphone, although listed, doesn't pick up anything at all.

Neither work in Skype chat calls.

So I have a defective microphone or am I forgetting something here? I'm a bit new to Windows 7 so I think it could be possible.

I doubt its a defective mic - Skype is issue prone (at least here on the forums - do a search in the Alienware forum only for 'Skype').

Be sure to verify not only Windows settings for the mic, but also the audio chipset's (insert IDT or Realtek here depending on system) settings in addition to the apps settings.
