I just got my M17x R4 and just tried minecraft today and the performance is awful, my desktop is much faster despite being a slower computer, i3 2100, 4gb of ram and an AMD 5770 card vs the laptop's i7 3610QM, 6gb of ram and AMD 7970m card, my desktop just bounces off the vsync at 60fps, the laptop is only getting 20-30fps even though the 7970m is significantly faster than the 5770, my only thought is that it's somehow running on the intel graphics despite setting java and minecraft to use the AMD card, but I don't know how to tell which card is running while running the game.

Are you using enduro? I've seen many people disabling it and the iGPU completely because of issues.
Edit: Also, are you sure you're running 64 bit Java?

Yup, I have that all setup just how it came so it's using the graphics card switching.

According to Slick it is buggy as hell. (New tech, new drivers, nothing too big of a problem.) Let me see if I can find his post about it.
Edit: Forgot to ask, have you tried Fn+F7?

Yup i'm positive i'm running 64bit Java. So I used FN + F7 to disable Enduro and definitely was using the integrated graphics as my FPS went way up after doing that, however despite my fps being 100-140fps it randomly just bogs down and is not very responsive, like moving thru molasses, however even when it's doing that the fps doesn't drop at all, still get 100+ fps, it's just not responsive at all and running slowly, but other times it's perfectly fine and responsive.

ok all 7970m have this problem.. try the ati 12.5 betta drivers they work for me.. im on a m18x-r1 with cf 7970s..
-
I just installed those beta drivers and no go, still the exact same thing, Minecraft is the only game i've had that issue with, Diablo 3 for example played fine.
Also for reference, i'm assuming since I've installed AMD drivers not the official Dell drivers to not switch back to enduro? -

Enduro is new software so it is buggy. Just avoid it entirely for now.
Question, what browser did you download Java with?
Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2 -
I downloaded it with Chrome, i'm not however playing the game in the browser with the java plugin, I downloaded the windows 64bit java software and i'm playing Minecraft thru the downloaded exe versions.

Are you 100% sure? The reason I ask is you need to be using IE 64 bit for Java.com to give you the 64 bit version. (Without choosing a different version somewhere on the site.)
Try going to programs and features and checking. If it has (64-bit) in the name it is the correct version.
It sounds like an issue with Java if all of your other games run properly.

Yup, i'm sure, it has the (64-bit) next to it, you just have to go to the spot on their site for manual install to download the exe for the 64 bit version, which works on any browser.

Let me see if I can get someone in here who knows more about the 7970m drivers than I do.
If it isn't that, it sounds like a RAM or Java issue. -
Ok. Fyi too but I actually had the same moving thru molasses type problem on my desktop originally but someone told me to get optifine multicore version for Minecraft and that had fixed the problem on my desktop, however it did not on the m17x.

You may want to have a look at this: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/343030-minecraft-speedoptimization-guide-v-23-5-updated-on-may-24/
I found it with a quick google search, but it looks promising.
If you are playing other games such as Diablo 3 and not running into any issues I don't think it would be the 7970m. -
Most of those are things I've done already, though it all seems to focus on FPS which isn't my issue since disabling enduro, whatever the issue is not FPS bound since I get it with 100+ FPS.

That's what leads me to believe it is a Java or RAM problem. You could try clean-installing the game and Java. Other than that, I'm not sure how to help you. I don't know enough about that game in particular, sorry.
