    Hello,

I've been a bit confused about this. I have an Alienware M17x r4 that currently has a 980m and an i7-3920xm.

If I understand right, the 980m supports at most Displayport 1.2. I've used it with a 4k monitor, so it has to be at least 1.2. The GTX 1070 should support Displayport 1.4 though which is the requirement for HDR. Am I limited by the physical port on the laptop? Or if I upgraded to a GTX 1070, would I be able to use HDR output?

    Thanks!

The physical port will limit you.

Ah, so there's no way to get HDR output then?

Not that I believe, but spending that much on a monitor (you'll have to so you can see a difference) you might as well get a better machine

Ah. Unfortunate. Just thought I might have a more cost effective way to get there. Thanks!

Yeah what the gpu supports and what the motherboard supports are a problem unique to laptops with mxm ports lol

Though there are worse problems to have :p

Probably just a different level shifter on the motherboard. BTW Oculus claim I need min 1.3 HDMI but working just fine on M17x R4 with 1070

Makes sense since Oculus working. Glad I decided to ignore comment from 2010. Perhaps back then it was GPU card limited and not the physical port.

Ranger was to my understanding late 2013/ early 2014.

So is mine lol. Using my m4600 for entertainment and such for now. Got plans to mod up the chassis anyway. Add another 7TB of storage hopefully. (5TB HDD and 2TB SSD)

I plan to mod my M18X R2 with 6 HDD's (3 HDD in the bay, 1 MSATA, and 2 in the ODD)
I found a RAID card that fits in the ODD bay and splits the SATA port, I'll link it for you

    Slimeline ODD to SATA adapter

Note, the RAID card is RAID 0 only, not JBOD

Very interesting, is that a USB header that it would use for power?

I was thinking of using a mpcie to 2x sata data and just solder the USB power to the 2x USB 3.0 on the right of the ranger (bc I never use them, right handed)

It turns the ODD into a normal SATA power and Data, and the RAID card allows for two HDD's.
Might be a little much to ask of the ODD power, but 15W should be fine for two 7MM drives

Nah. I see my laptop as a DTR and treat it as such. I dont need the battery so I remove it on systems I treat as DTR's. Then I need to fill that space I created with a new function.

Plus its easier this way when traveling via plane.

Well the Ranger uses a interposer cable for the ODD and have to get a different cable to make it HDD compatible. Very interesting component though, best of luck on your process.
