Hey y'all, I've just replaced my beloved m17x r2 off eBay. Or, attempted to atleast.

But I think I actually am running an R1 in an R2 shell...

Wanted to upgrade processor, because it's core 2 duo. Figured I should update BIOS before upgrading any of my hardware.

The BIOS version is a02, I couldn't find anything older than a09, so I tried installed that. It didn't work, said something along the lines of the part ID not matching or something.

BIOS says M17x. HWiNFO says M17x. My service tag, also sourced from BIOS, is HGSV4K1, which also comes up as just an M17x. I don't know if the revision number is supposed to be there or not.

This was $300. Have I been screwed over? What do I do from here?

    Core 2 duo is the R1. R2 will be 1st Gen i5 or i7

...or at least that’s what I believe

    Core 2 duo M17x = M17x R1. The chassis is interchangeable between R1 and R2. I know because I have both machines.

Well, can't send it back so I wonder then what my options are for getting this thing at it's full potential. Man I feel like I've been ripped off. How much are R1s usually worth?

Depends on CPU and GPU config

R1 is worth about the same that typically being around $200-300 or so given condition and specs. Chances are that it was board swapped due to the original board probably failed as there is no other reason to swap unless the machine was built from lose parts. As for the cpu your options are limited but at least the mxm will upgrade to Kepler be it a quadro in my experience thus far. The K3000m works with good temps and the K4100M works as well but some versions of the driver act up. Be sure to replace the thermalpad for a copper shim to help the MCP as that chip runs pretty hot.

K4100M working with fan control and sleep in M17x R1, really? GTX 680M was sitting there with fan speed stuck on low and broken sleep. I may have to buy the quadro card then

After fiddling with the gtx 675ms that I pulled from my 18x r2 and a ES gtx280m I gave up on tinkering with GTX cards plus they tend to cost a lot vs the often cheaper Quadros. The only downside atm is cost as demand went up over the past summer so cards that were little as $20 shipped now go for a couple of times that. By the way I only used Win10 and didn't have to Jerry rig the drivers, I did use thermal pads for the vram on the backside of the cards and it didn't hurt air flow.

But the M17x R1 can sleep and wake with the K4100M?
