I was a bit frustratedthat no one even Dell can furnish separated heatsink for the new alienware, for me it's not acceptable that some parts are not available for our laptop. i try Dell USA and europe ( i got a home there so i can be furnished ) but any way... my last solution was to mod one from my R3 to be fit on the R5.
I got 2 heatsink with 3pipes, for my gtx765m, i mod the oldest one, the other one, i think better, i keep it for the gtx780m.
To mod this, it was pretty easy, just a bit of cutting, that's all, here the result:
I know, not sexy^^ but it's a beta![]()

Here some temps:

Playing far cry 3

If someone can share his idle temp or playing temp too with gtx765m, i ll be glad to see if we can see a real difference. As i got more copper pads to come.
I used IC diamonds 7 as thermal paste.
My final result will be on the heatsink for gtx780m, with copper and artic silver glue and i will still use the ic diamond as thermal paste.
Thanks for reading![]()

Thanks for sharing! +1 rep. That must have been hard to achieve.

My finished Mod heatsink from r3 to R5. I played BattleField 4 on Ultra config with an average of 60fps, no freeze or lag for at least 1hours.
temp:
What i used: ( IC diamonds for core and mx4 between the pipes)
Result:
I'm pretty happy about the resultalos the CPU is nice result, it pass from 61 to 59 max with the help of copper pad and aluminium tape.
Same result for GPU:
This is before i tape and used the pads:

Hi, I have checked mine out and this is the results of an hour in Bioshock Inf.:
This is the fourth one I've had and it runs quite a bit cooler than the previous ones. This was with a mild (680) overclock. I see hwinfo now gives the VRM temps. These were identified as the hottest part of the card by a guy using a thermal camera. These chips have some sort of thermal putty connecting them to the MB. This is the one I'm using now, as supplied by Dell.
Hope it helps. -

i used aluminium tape as conductivity. It's cheapest way for conductivity as it doesn't worth for an heatsink to be fulled taped with coppers. And i give a try between no tape or tape on the cpu with a copper, it change from 1 degre so i think more myself that aluminium tape was just a cosmetic way too^^
I don't think so that color is a huge difference for emmision of heat. I think you are confusing dark color as black keep heat and white color as white is reflecting: take a white and black iphone in front of the sun: the black after an hours is burning in your hand. Colors don't play in the transmmition of the vibration of each particule. Metal has a better conductivity than wood as example. In order, gold, silver, copper, aluminium have some better proprieties of conduction but a color doesn't have a conductivity proprieties, even not about convection proprieties. So i think so that black was used as a cosmetic way too. Maybe i'm wrong but i cannot remeber having studied heat transmition through the help of color^^. The glue i used has a good proprieties for convection.

Either way, it doesn't seem to be having any detrimental effect in your testing you did, so no point in changing it.DARCODER likes this. -

Try taping the air gap of both CPU/GPU fans.
