    Hi folks.

I have been looking at two external displays for my m17x which are:

    Alienware optx aw2110 - 21.5"
    Samsung BX2450 24"

The Sammy is an LED backlit but i dont know about the AW - i doont think it is but if anyone can confirm, great.

Both full HD, both 2ms response time, both TN panels....

Sammy is £194 and the AW is £270 i think.

Hard choice, just looking for some advice if anyone has any....atm I have the Sammy on order but dont have to keep it if the AW is better....im not sure that it is....

    Anyway...ady advice welcomed

No it is not. I have the monitor, to be honest I wasnt blown away but i think that was cause I went from looking at the laptop screen that was impeccable to it. Although I love the monitor and even paid to have it shipped overseas when I moved. Now just waiting for it!

Thanks for the opinion on your OptX - I am pretty sure that I wont get anything that will MATCH the screen on the lappy as it is RGBLED afterall, and to get that on an external monitor would mean spending out a heck of a lot of cash to get an S-IPS panel instead of the average TN panel that both of these monitors have.

I kind of wondered given that the lappy screen is LED backlit, wether I should stick to LED backlit to get the best "snappiest" quality picture.

Seems like they both have had good reviews but with the Samsung offering more screen real estate (2.5" bigger) and having the benefit of LED backlighting, I think im gonna be quite happy with that and its £80 cheaper which is a lot at this price range.

I suppose, unless someone out there has had these two side by side, its impossible to tell which is the better of the two. They both have their good/bad points but for me, I think the extra cash that I will save can be put toward a small SSD at some point and I will still have a great external screen.

Again, if anyone has direct experience of either monitor, please post.

    Thanks for your replies.

The OPTX aw2210 is about 195 GBP ($290). I am an AW fanboy, but 290 for a 22 in monitor is steep. Albeit ebay has some used ones cheaper.
I have seen the AW2310 3d monitor for under $400.

If you can tell me where in the UK it is on sale new for £195gbp, I would seriously look at that as an option. (AW2210 that is)

I have been on Dell uk site and its £270 allbeit for a few pennies....here:

Monitors : Monitors: Flat Screen LCD Computer Monitors and Displays | Dell UK

    £269.10 including vat and delivery......for the 2210 NOT the 3d 2310.

This could be an option maybe depends on how bothered you are about the response times :) but it's an IPS panel and seems pretty good. It's a Dell 23" 1920x1080 monitor and for only £175 it's a steal!

    Dell U2311H UK page £175

Hope this helps, depends on your preferences!

    Hi again,

    Thanks for the post.

When i looked into the possibility of IPS panels, they were pricey so the one you listed really is a great deal on an IPS panel screen.
After weighing up want I want from the monitor, I looked at several factors. These ranged from picture quality to viewing angles and connectivity. Response times also played a big factor due to the nature of Alienware systems and the gaming thoroughbred.

IPS panles are truly brilliant for reproduction of images and are impeccable for photo work and such - basically, I decided that I did not need that level of precision and that, to be honest, I doubt my eyes would really appreciate the subtle differences.

Now, when it comes to gaming, which is one of the main reasons for buying the laptop, I would be much more put out if I had ghosting on fast moving games.

IPS panels suffer greatly from reduced response times and, with that, would not be the panle of choice for games.

It was a tough choice, I went with the BX2450 - 24" LED Full 1080p with a 2ms response time. Its a twisted nematic panel but has had good reviews. Granted, for photo work, it would be left standing byt the IPS Dell panel, but unforynately, at this point in time, there doesnt seem to be a comprimise.

If there was an IPS panel with a 2ms response time, I would dearly love to see or own one - and also lose half a leg to afford one LOL

Anyway, have the BX2450 now, havent set it up yet but I will post with a review when i get the chance.

Thanks to everyone for the input. :D

while some of the more expensive IPS panels have response times that are tolerable for gaming, that particular one is pretty bad. I think it's something like 12 ms. Great deal if you arent going to be gaming though.

Dell site states 8ms - thats 4 times slower than the BX2450 i bought.....a no brainer for gaming.....

Do you have it yet? I have my eye on the ASUS VE248H I posted above, but I'm still curious to know how the BX2450 is. I imagine that I would be happy with either probably but VE248H is on sale right now.

Yep, i have it right here - havent set it up yet as those a-holes at samsung only included a euro plug when im in the uk.....easy fix tho, cant beleive it came without a UK plug when i bought it from amazon UK.....thats the only thing im not happy about....mind you - £20 off the price for the hassle bringing it down to £170 is pretty good and all i have to do is buy a £1.99 IEC C7 to UK plug mains cable and im good to go....looks good even turned off LMAO!

The only reason i went for the Sammy is because of their reputation for panels....good quality generally.....i own Sammy HDTV's and they are great so i dont forsee a problem....

The asus looks good for the money, dont know of their reputation in panels tho....but i know some of their lappys suck big time LOL

EDIT: actually, i do know about asus panels a bit...the g73 i returned...due to its really crappy display....that would put me off ANY asus display.....full stop.
