Hey, just handed off my R4 to a tech for MOBO change after lighting issues (probably wont help) and i gotta say im alittle worried lol.
A few days back a tech came to replace my keyboard and i ended up having to give him instructions on how to disassemble the lappy down to the keyboard. the guy was trying to force the media panel off with a screwdriver to the point where i heard one of the clips snap. I realized he had not removed the 3 screws under the backplate that are holding it in place. Hes worked on the m17x before, but has apparently had no training in the R4.

He really took no care to avoid scratching the screen or the media plate. Honestly Im alittle worried about the competancy of these people. I know Dells "go to move" is replacing MOBOS when theres something they cant troubleshoot further , but atleast make sure the people working on the machine are trained. Im from norway and this R4 cost me rougly 4000 dollars. Other then the light issue which ive spent the better part of 4 days trying to fix hoping it was software related, the comp is perfect. I just hope they dont f it up...
They have taken the 680m (which i have) off the available choices on the norwegian dell site (prolly out of stock), so if they mess my comp up who knows how long ittl take them to get me a new one ... Im sorry if theres no question here , just felt like going on a rant :(

Unfortunately Dell has no direct control over the quality of service techs in any particular area but you can always raise a complaint directly with Dell or the company that employed the service tech. If you do it with Dell they should be able to forward it to the appropriate service company for your area. I know that the techs around in my area are quite good and had taken very good care of my system during dis-assembly and rebuild.

As for the 680m someone mentioned in the order status thread that their unit was delayed to mid-september...

usually, the techs that show up are laptop specialists and not m17x specialists. They could have been working on Lenovo's or Acers just before coming over to your place. PLus they generally rush through the job. Some techs are good though, however, your story is not uncommon

They get paid per job so they rush to do as many as possible unfortunately. I had 2 different guys come out to replace my board twice. The first guy was super careful the next guy rushed the whole job but pointed out a couple screws that were missing previously and replaced them...Hah.

i don't know if the warranty is similar in Norway as it is in the US. but you could try asking tech support to dispatch just the part to you. just tell them you are a tech and want to replace the part yourself.

i personally refuse to let anyone "repair" my alienwares. send me the part and i'll do it myself. these in-home tech guys or even the tech guys at dell, they didn't pay a penny for our laptops. what do they care about scratching it or breaking it some more in the process of "repairing".

Hmm. Luckily the the tech I had to replace my screen was a pretty good guy. He did have to come out twice though.
