I'm probably going to get slack for this but...

Newegg has a great deal on some Corsair value select 16gb ram (2x8gb) DDR3 1333. It's about $80 shipped after taxes (for me anyway). Yes I know its slower than the stock ram but does it really make that much of a difference? I'm not a computer expert and I don't pretend to be one but I'm assuming it'll still work with the laptop. I do not care for high scores on benchmarks. I only care about real world performance especially playing games. Though saying that, I don't know if having an additional 8gb over my current 8gb setup would help much either... :p

What do you all think? Probably even cheaper to just get another 2 sticks of 4gb huh?

What are you doing with the computer?

If just gaming, then >8 Gb is not necessary.
In general a person won't usually notice a large performance improvement between speeds. If all you do is game and general online surfing & video or movie streaming, keep what you have now. If you plan on editing video or running vmware, get more and while higher speed rating is a nice thing you probably won't notice much of a difference.

    Helpful Article, Maybe.

I'm pretty sure if you get a slower set of RAM than is in your machine now, the FSB should downclock to the slower speed. For optimal performance you should match the speeds between the sets. But again, if you're just streaming, surfing and gaming, the RAM speed really shouldn't make much difference for you.

i would go with more ram. The performance difference is negligible in faster ram.

Yeah I'll probably just leave it for now. Could always upgrade to another 2 sticks when needed. Thanks all!

You can always use the program Typhoon Burner ($22 I think) to flash the ram to a higher speed. Best of both worlds and worth a shot.

I added the Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1600MHz kit (its on amazon.com for about $45) to my HP Elitebook and it runs much much faster than it did on the stock memory, which was 6GB 1333MHz (WEI RAM score increased from 6.6 to 7.5, if that means anything to you). If you ask me, you don't need more than 8GB of memory and the only time I see a sizeable portion (we're talking 80-85% of my total memory here) being used is when I am running Photoshop and Illustrator simultaneously, and at all other times I never see my total memory usage go above 40%.

I'd say stick to the 8GB you have now, since more than 8gigs is not going to pay much of a difference at all (unless you run VMs and do a lot of video editing). If you want faster memory, Go for what DR650SE says above, I'm pretty sure I saw a thread somewhere explaining how to flash memory to high speeds.. good luck :)

I don't know if you might really consider this, but here is GeoCake's post in this thread that explains how to flash memory :) if you ask me, its kind of an overkill xD but handy anyway! -
