hi guys i got my m17x r3 with 580m + 3d today......this is my first alienware and i have to say im impressed ....its really good .......i thought it would be heavy as hell but surprisingly its of moderate weight not very heavy ....but it does look big ......now come the problems i have not installed any games or heavy duty softwares so cant comment about the performance....regarding the built quality the battery doesnt sit perfectly , it does move when tapped , and the plastic bar on the left side of the ports is loose it doesnt sit properly , will a dell rep be able to fix it ? nothing big but its annoying .....let me know ?
overall its an awesome laptop 8.75/10
5aug - ordered
7aug - shipped![]()
22aug - received :-(

Call Dell to fix it. You didn't pay for a premium laptop that wasn't put together properly.
-
i will , i just hope he will be ale to fix it when he comes over , rather than taking it back ....
-
guys also im on A06 BIOS should i upgrade to A08
-
Help.........................
-
hey, not sure regarding that bios upgrade. i am on A04 and have no problems thus I dont want to risk any issues by upgrading to A08 ;-) regarding loose battery, i had same problem, dell texnician ordered new chassis and battery, he broke my motherboard during switch and it ended up with ordering of replacement for whole machine. This one also has loose battery, although its much better and i can live with it. but i am not sure about that plastic bar on the left side, dont have this problem.
-
the battery i think i can live with it too ..no big deal.....regarding the left bar on top side it just moves a little ...only noticeable if particularly look for it....
guys my temperature for gpu are around 60 C when not stressing isnt it high ? ....and the cpu 56-60.............................is there anyway to remove throttle on 580m ? it does throttle a lot -
there is:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...again-reflash-stock-a08-throttle-removed.html
tltr:
1) flash bios A04 using dells executable
2) flash bios A08 using lvneptunes blind flash method
3) profit up to ~78°C, than nvidias vbios-throttle kicks in -
hey im A06 now ...........which A08 should i flash ? ....also is it a completely safe method cos i got my laptop just today ??
-
since A06 already got the throttle implemented you first have to flash A04 using dells executable.
after this, get bios A08 and flash it via blind flash.
if you follow every step exactly as written down by lvneptune, its safe (i just did it and it works perfectly) -
ok...will try hey both A04 and A08 dell versions only right ? not the modified ones ??
-
thats right, use the original dell bios files.
-
hey thks will try it out today ...since you have the same config as me , what kind of performance are you getting while playing games in 3d in native resolution and high settings ............with A06 within minutes framerates drop a lot
-
i didnt use the 3D-option yet and since i updated to the latest nvidia-driver 280.26, obiviously (althought release notes say otherwise) these dont support the 3D-option in the M17xR3.
-
280.26 does support 3d its works fine........... -
hm it seems im the only one who cant use 3D or at least im making the same mistake over and over again.
the way i tried was:
go to the nvidia-control-panel
activate "stereoscopic 3D"
the 3D-vision assistant pops up
its showing you these 2 pictures and asks you to view each with a different eye (using nvidia glasses ofc) > i see the same picture, no matter if left or right.
hence when i click them it tells me "hardware not working properly"
what am i doing wrong? is there any other way to activate the 3D-mode? -
even i do it the same way and it works.......did u switch on the 3d glasses ? there is small switch on them ? are the glasses charged ?
-
yes i switched them on and the led shows a green light for about 30 seconds
-
reinstall them and it should work ...onemore thing during installation if it asks that the 3d vision driver is newer than the installation just choose to overwrite and it should work......let me know
-
before i reinstall the drivers, where did you get yours? right from the official nvidia-homepage?
-
yes.....right from nvidia website and later downloaded a inf mod from here....good luck
-
hm, do you remember where u got these modded inf from?
maybe this could fix my problem... -
-
oh, didnt realize you used the modded inf for the m18x ^^
will try this and report back
hurray: it worked! thanks for your help, +rep
-
welcome
hey how ur performance while playing games ? ...my laptop easily gets throttled when playing crysis 2 .....temp easily reaches 78 and nvidia vbios throttles cants play even for 10-15 min without getting throttled.....really disappointed
-
i didnt test crysis 2 yet (probably tomorrow).
just played crysis 1 in 3D for about 15mins without noticing any throttling...looks nice though
MotherShip has just landed
