Motherboard or AC adapter (again) problem?

Hi

Awhile back I posted a thread on problems with my power adaptor causing my laptop to give out an annoying electrical humming noise.
I had it replaced and the problem was gone, however it has come back now even with the replacement which at first seemed to have fixed the problem.

It gives out the noise when the laptop is at 100% charge, although from my previous experience I think it is going to get worse (louder, at before 100% charge).

My question is, do you think this is a problem with my adaptor (again) or is my laptop the problem? I have not contacted Dell yet but should i request the whole laptop get sent to depot or something? I don't know if another replacement adaptor will just start giving me the same problem again a few months down the line like this replacement has done.

Mine humbs but only audible at night when i want to sleep so i shut it off .

 

Can you isolate where the humming is coming from exactly? Is it the power brick itself that's humming or somewhere else?

 

It's coming from two locations, from the AC adaptor itself (but its too far away for me to hear it, I can only hear it when I put my ear next to it) and from the corner of the laptop where the headphone and microphone sockets are. Its this noise that is annoying me as I can hear it.

When I put my ear next to the AC adaptor it makes the exact same noise, even in sync with the noise coming out from the corner of the laptop.

I've tried replacing the power cable and trying another power socket. No luck.

Should I request a new adaptor from Dell (again) or ask for the laptop to be sent to depot

No.

I think the problem may be related to my stock HDD.
I removed it, the sound was gone.

I then changed its place from HDD bay 0 to HDD bay 1 (swapped with my SSD), and now the sound is much quieter, still there but at least not coming from the same place anymore.

Nope, the sound is still loud as it was before (with the HDD in a different bay). Just not coming from the same place now

 

interesting...so if you're just running with the SSD, no noise.

Looks like a great reason to go out and get another SSD to compliment the 60gig

PS...don't worry, the HDD is under warranty

 

have somewhat similar problem, my strategy is to wait until new hardware is out there (Q2 2012) and then if it is bothering me, request replacement, they won't have any of the previous cards at hand or let's put it in other words, an upgrade is in order

EDIT: btw the sound from my lappy kind of decreased when I reseated the ram (a few times, thanks to 1866 fiasco ), also I figured out it might be coming from SSD.. ton of people on the web complains that SSDs may make a high pitch noise, no idea

 

Good stuff I will probably get two SSDs and RAID 0 them when I can afford it. Also good to know the HDD is covered too, especially with the prices at the moment being high!

Hmm, I'll give that a try (the RAM idea ). I don't think my SSD is giving out the noise but I will one day take off the back cover and try to pinpoint where the noise is really coming from.

About upgrading... <del>hopefully</del> If one day my graphics card breaks (in warranty of course) and all that is available are newer cards, I will be sure to let Dell know it needs a replacement

It turns out the noise is still there even after I remove my HDD.

But I made a very interesting discovery.

When I switch to the High Performance GPU (6990m) the sound is pretty much gone (after I wait for the fans to stop spinning to see if I can hear the noise again; which I cannot).
Then when I switch to the Intel Power Saving GPU (2630QM) the sound is back.

So its this Power Saving GPU mode that gives off this electrical whine!
I am assuming this isn't normal, anybody have any input on this?

 

I will give that a try prank1, I guess it might be it because it is originating around CPU fan and whenever CPU fan kicks off because of integrated GPU, the sound stops for a split second..
