So I bought a new ssd and hdd 2 weeks ago. installed them and formated my pc. fresh install of Windows 7 ultimate.

I had a crash the first day, but that was it, and then nothing for a while. but now its more frequent. It can happen at any time, but mostly when i play games. and today i have had 10 crashes while playing... and 1 when browsing with chrome (game was not running then). I cant see a BSOD the PC just looses the image for 5 to 10 sec, then restarts.

I have no idea what to do. i get crashdumps, but i cant read them. What do you need to help me?

Hi, I see you have a 580m, probably the worst GPU I have ever come across. They often give up for no apparent reason. I have seen at least a dozen failures over the last 12 months .

Get whocrashed to check the dumps http://www.resplendence.com/whocrashed but I'm sure the GPU will be the problem.

Check out this thread for upgrade info: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/m17x-r3-680m-compatability.672230/

It's a big thread but the 680m is a very reliable replacement and performance will be quite a step up.

, maybe i installed a wrong driver when reinstalling windows?

I'm guessing here but you never bothered updating the video driver before? Just putting on the latest has been known to push a 580m over the edge. V314.22 was the last stable driver and after that a bug caused an overvolt. This in itself should not have been a problem but the card was so borderline to start with it does not take too much to kill them. I had two fail on my R3 and a 675m (which is a rebadged 580m) on my R4.

If you can track down that driver you might get some more time out of it, for me I got a couple of extra months.

Ok tnx :) i wil give it a try! But what is kernel mode?? The bug report said a third party driver is the cause, is that the nvidia driver??

Im having a hard time finding a new card to my pc where i live (in Norway). And an even harder time to know whitch one will fit, when it seemes there are more than 1 type of the same card. Thanks :)

It is the nvidia driver that reported the error but this is typical when a card starts to fail.

There are two types of 680m available. The 2gb version is the dell one and the 4gb is the clevo one. Both work and the clevo one does not limit overclocking. Since the card is VERY overclockable the clevo is probably the better choice but I got the dell one and simply loaded an unlocked vbios so I could fully OC it (+220mhz!).

Your 580m heatsink will fit bit I recommend getting the 680m heatsink from dell for the R4. This is reasonable (around £40.00) and comes with paste and pads pre-applied so it is simple to just assemble. No need to figure out all the padding which is important. Also get the x-bracket with the card as although your 580m one will fit it may not apply the correct pressure causing it to run a little hotter.

    Good luck ;)

So the heatsink for the 680m (from r4) will fit my r3?

Do you have any links to where i can buy all this?

I need the 680m, heatsink and new x-bracket :) Thanks, your help is much appreciated :)

Yes, the R3 and R4 are basically the same physically. The heatsink is cheapest directly from dell. I just called the AW support number and asked the guy for it. support can sell parts and they know a little more than the dell sales line. Because you have an R3 they will need to look up the R4 part and they will disclaim that it fits and works. They have a list of approved parts and tend to stick to it.

I got my card off ebay from a private seller but there are a couple of retailers on ebay that sell nvidia cards, I'll check any out you find for confirmation. I also have a package I put together for the dell 680m to get the best out of it so PM me for a link when you get the card.

You will need a modified inf file for the driver install but these are available from www.laptopvideo2go.com/drivers. Ignore the search and just select the driver you want.

Forgot to add, if you have the 120hz 3d model the 3D no longer works but 120hz is fine :).

New problem ofc... deleted the old (new) nvidia driver via device manager, now i try install the new driver (314,22) and it fails. It says nvidia installer cannot continue. This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware.

Hmm, not good. Is it a 3d model, that makes a difference.

That problem usually occurs with a wrong (non-standard) GPU. It's what happens when the driver does not contain the card, which it should. You'd be doing this if you get a 680m.

A couple of things to try:

Replace the install inf, burried deep within the c:\nvidia\.. folder structure. It's in a folder titled display.driver. http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/infs/310series/31422_win8x64/nvwin.inf. Just select file, save from the browser menu and replace the file of the same name.

Get the dell driver and try that one. It's very old but dell do not update older models : http://www.dell.com/support/home/us...ienware-m17x-r3&languageCode=EN&categoryId=VI

Doh! Sorry. Does the card work any better?

Dell are going to have a problem (probably) with getting you a 580m I would think? They will have an approved driver they will want to try first though.

    Is it a 3D model (120hz display)??

Yes its a 3D model 120hz display. Talking to dell to see if they can get me a heatsink or a 680m? or should i not bother and just go to ebay and try to find what i need? no one is selling this stuff where i live :S With these kinds of stuff its not good living in Norway!

I will try to play for a while now and see if i have any crashes! Im gonna post here again when, or hopefully not my pc crashes!

    Ah, gotcha.

The 3D model makes the upgrade way easier than a 60hz model. They have to use an unlocked bios and switch the machine to NV card only. The 120hz model only runs on the NV card so it only needs the modified installer file.

Definitely try dell for the heatsink. I have seen them on sale on ebay but overpriced.

According to one of those pre-election surveys I saw Norway has the highest percentage of happy citizens? Way too cold for me .

    Fingers crossed...

When I have seen this you can skip or escape the error and the game starts? If this is not an option then you are going to have to try a later driver :(

nope, pressing OK and nothing starts..looks like it wont even start with an older driver...are all the drivers over 314.22 bad for the card?
We are generaly happy yes, Im happy to, but its hard to find stuff we want. But your life wont get worse because of that, its just realy irritating and time consuming getting stuff you need. And the cold, you build up tolerance, so its not so bad!

I guess you do get used to it, a couple of weeks working in Canada mid-winter was enough for me to stay in warm places haha.

The 320 series were the worst and killed a lot of older cards. The later you get the more they move away from supporting older cards for the latest and greatest. They did fix the overvolt a few releases later but I never got to try them since I upgraded to the 680m. Try the minimum one the game wants.

Well its now even worse...i go into the game and the pc crashes in under 1 minute... is everything right here? gpu-z screenshot.gif

I read someplace that i can make windows wait longer for the gpu before restarting the PC. Will this work in my case? and i cant read this, but does my gpu get 15v? and is 15v the right amount? i hate the 580m...:S

I don't think that will help you. It's for what is known as a TDR error. This is a windows timing error and extending the timeout stops the 'driver stopped responding' message, sometimes with a blue screen. The game still 'hangs' but it continues.

The 'VDDC' number you see is an average of the voltage and shows me it has not hit 0.92v. I believe you can change this to max not average which will be a better indicator of an overvolt.

The card has a few power states where the clocks and voltages change. P0 is the fastest with a voltage of 0.87V and clock of 620mhz. Then there is P1. This is the first throttle and should happen during things like cut scenes where the card is not being pushed. A voltage of 0.82v and clock of 410mhz. Problems with that card meant that it often switched to P1 when it should not. The result was the game slowing down quite a bit. Then there is P8, the maximum power saving/throttle. The GPU will drop to 50mhz and a voltage of 0.80v.

If you use nvidiaInspector then you can see the 'P' states and settings in the overclocking page. You don't get to change voltages but you can use HWInfo64 to monitor all this stuff so you can see what is happening. P8 is the normal setting in windows.

If you see 0.92v at any time then the driver is overvolting. You could spend ages trying different NV drivers and you might get lucky, but it's a drag :(.

Also use DDU between drivers to clear out all the stuff that sometimes gets left behind. http://www.wagnardmobile.com/DDU/

If you have a game that runs then you can set up all the numbers in an on-screen display while gaming but you may not be up for all that?

Hmm, then we do need to on screen it and log. HWInfo can log to file - looks like the overvolt is there briefly. Time to try another driver.

Get msiAfterburner and when installing accept the second program - it's not bloat!

Go to the monitors tab under settings. Tick the gpu clock, voltage, usage, and frame rate. As you select each one scroll down and check the 'show in OSD' box. Now minimise. You should see a second running program that is the OSD server.

In hwinfo you deselect all the stuff you're not interested in and somewhere in the settings you can select for these numbers to be in the OSD.

Now go gaming and you should see the numbers. The 0.92v might only be for a second or so but I believe this is enough to push the cra**y 580m over the edge - permanently .

I think it's just too much for a card that is failing. It is kinda grabbing at straws IMO but you can get lucky.

This rewrites the microcode that the card operates from. It has things like voltages set into it. If for example you wanted the P0 and P1 clocks and voltages to match (a workaround for the P1 problem) then you use a modified vbios. Same if you wanted to overvolt it.

so it is possible to underclock, or undervolt the card? i may have a performance decrease, but i can still use it?

That was going to be a suggestion that I forgot. Undervolting is not available since it relies on someone releasing a vbios but you should be able to downclock the P0 state in nvidiainspector. Try dropping 10mhz a time is what I'd do..

That dell one could give your card a refresh and they did mark it as Urgent.

Ok I will try that. Drop 10mhz in msi afterburner right? I have never clocked anything, so my knowlage is limited on this.

As for the vbios i have no cd to burn on, is it possible to do it with usb?

It is possible but I'm unsure if it will create a bootable USB (F12 to select boot device).

The long method is to create a bootable USB (research required) then use something like winzip to extract the files from the iso onto the USB. There should be a .bat file to run that will do the flashing.

Yes re the clock although I prefer Inspector for this afterburner will suffice.

You're welcome. That was the last official vbios. There are ones that match P0 and P1 but your problems are beyond that fix :(.

    Good luck.
