    Hi,

Today I open up my Alienware M17x-R1 to replace the GPU fans. This is not my first time, done more than 20 times before this BUT today is the first time some error pop up.

After replacing my GPU fans, I turn on the system and see that my device was detected as Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, basically the same error as this @ http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...sli-nvida-310-33-windows-8-searching-inf.html . I just follow the provided solution and reinstall my Nvidia Driver, everything seems like working normally. I restarted my system after the installation.

At BIOS, I disable both descrete and integrated GPU (the same setting I been use to enable GTX280M SLi) and Save & Exit which is basically restared again the system. The boot become dark and delayed aroun 5-8 seconds, and it restart itself again before even appearing the option to enter the bios setting. Once the system boot up, I check using GPU-Z, my laptop only detect 9400M and Microsoft Basic Display Adapter (only one, where normally it should be 2 as I do have GTX280M SLi).

I again restarting the laptop and went into bios to force-closing 9400M. This is where my screen become flickering with colors, red blue, yellow, green etc but the sound of Windows boot up is normal. There I suspect that something is wrong with my GTX280M.

FYI, I just changed my left GTX280M. Not both.

Anyone have any idea how to check the status of my GPU? :(

If i undertanded u correctly. Even if you disable integrated graphics in bios it still runs integrated graphics which is 9400m not 280 sli right? i had the same problem your bios is bugged somehow. eject main battery and coincell battery and press power button (alien head) for 30 seconds. Put batteries back and try again it should work now good luck :)

EDIT: also check in bios again and disable integrated graphics

it must be fixable i had this issue when i unpluged power cord and when i restarted laptop i plugged cord back in before windows booted and it got bugged (like bios didnt recognized power adapter). And only integrated graphics worked even if i disabled it in bios. So try this again. Open laptop again swap out cards and plug them back again. But now don't place battery in laptop just plug power cord and turn on laptop and see what happens.

Just one suggestion. I would have thought the 'Microsoft display adaptor' should show up as a 9400 NV

You could try to remove both 280's, power the machine up and you know you are running on the 9400. Now re-install the NV drivers. If that works and it shows up in the device manager put back the 280's and see what happens?

You might need to use dell published drivers first time before installing later ones :)

You need to do a clean install of the drivers. You can try disabling the discrete card in the BIOS and trying the drivers again, then re-enable the discrete card and install the drivers. All this from the DELL site.
