Hi guys, just came out of a long chat with the AW tech, and they decided that they onna replace my system, the fauts with the system was the random reboots, and after they replaced the motherboad , graphic card , heat sink and memory end with another fault bluetooth card not working ( not even showing on the device manager).
so i told that after 4 tech calls at my house i refuse to have my laptop open again considering its only 2 months old , so now thye said they going to send me a brand new replacement.

    my questions are:
    - how will i know the replacement is not a refurb?
    - and can i ask to upgrade my Graphic card to the new 6990m

if you guys got anymore ideas of things i could ask to the techs let me know

I tried to get my 460m to a 580m. They won't do it for free T_T. If your lucky they should let you upgrade. Probably will say "Yes you can, all you have to do is pay a difference."

Look for alot of scratches, wear and tear if you want to see if its a refurb on the inside. Some people have gotten "New replacements," only to see alot of scratches on speakers, older moniter with lots of smear marks, so on and so forth.

You can't ask to upgrade. You would have to buy the 6990m outright, and it would be better to get it from Clevo or MXM-Upgrades. Dell agents cannot defer from what was ordered originally - that's policy, plain and simple.

Refurb replacements would go to those that bought their computers from Dell Outlet, and mostly due to the lower price. You paid for a new notebook, and thus you shall receive a new replacement notebook.

Sorry to hear about all the problems with your computer. From my understanding, refurbs usually come in a brown Dell box and not the original Alienware box. Hopefully they won't try to send you a refurb system.

The easiest way to tell a refurb from new is the huge neon green sticker that appears on the bottom of refurbs. As far as the 6990m it's probably not gonna happen as that's 2 steps in upgrade from what you have now, if you get lucky and get a good rep you MAY get a 6970m.

I dont know how this is possible but to be blunt " KNOW YOUR RIGHTS AS CONSUMER AND BE AWARE THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS AS WELL AS HOW THEY ARE INTERPRETED". You are entitled for a full refund or " NEW " WUR ( Whole Unit Replacement ). There is nothing for you to beg or goad them. Trust me, if they try to shove it, you can make more money suing them. Document all the things that happened in a crystal clear email. Make sure you record all forms of communication and ensure that they email your their verbal commitment etc. I am stating based on experience.

You are not supposed to get a refurbished whole unit replacement. Your laptop is 2 months old. They problem is from their end. They will usually try a few technical visits. But soon the cost of sending out parts and engineers defeats the cost effective concept. It cannot be done repeatedly as it causes high level of wear and tear to the system which they are entirely responsible for. Even a single scratch caused by their engineer entitles you for part replacement. Hence after a few attempts they will issue you a whole unit replacement which MUST be new with equivalent or better specification. They never send out refurbished whole units in Asia. Only parts which are checked and should be good as new. Not with scratches and signs of usage. Sometimes Dell would even issue a new " Whole unit replacement " if they cant replace parts under warranty, if such components are no more available.

Refurbished units are clearly mentioned as they are and usually available in Dell Authorized Outlets at discount prices.

It would be quite insane and unethical for a customer who has paid money for a new one to be given a system that has been sent back or used by another.

new " Whole Unit Replacement " is the term they use if the replacement is brand new. I dont know in that part of the world but over here in Malaysia, India etc, when they issue a whole unit replacement its understood to be a brand new one. They would then create a quotation and ask if we agree with the specifications etc and then they would send it in for manufacture. You would be able to track the manufacture status etc.

Refurbished parts or internal components can be made available any time if its spanking good. But from what I have noted in this forum many customers in the west receive entire systems that are in fact returned by other customers after keeping it for the 21 day period etc. This practise is highly frowned upon in Asia and nobody will touch the system with a ten feet pole.

If I were you I would ask them very clearly what you are receiving. If indeed its a new machine, you can also look at the box and contents that you receive. The sticker on the box clearly will mention manufacturing dates etc.

As much as Dell's return after 21 days policy sounds nice many including forum members here abuse the machine prior to returning eg. dismantling it, removing the GPU etc. Sorry to say but its a messed up attitude. This creates a lot of issues for others in the process chain.

    You need to flash it.

See if its possible to get a refund if you dont get the 6990m. Tell them you are going to re-order.

Hopefully your new one is as good as my new replacement. I'm having zero trouble with it! Well... I had a little trouble with the Alienrespawn software causing strange graphical glitches but after I killed that it's been all good!

No upgrades but they took nearly $400 off the purchase price due to what they said was some of the parts were a little cheaper this time around.
