Just saw that this was posted in the Alienware general thread. Sorry if It's already been read. But I guess it can stay for a bit just in case some users, like me, only check the M17x thread.

If these pictures / information is correct, I'm quite disappointed by the new phyiscal appearance. They haven't really managed to make it much thinner, and it looks more square when the laptop is open. The coloured touchpad looks interesting, but I prefer the speaker look of the r3/r4. It doesn't seem to have much slant after the touchpad either which gave the r3/r4 the more curved modern look. The new design for the back of the screen is fairly decent though.

For example, this picture of the m18x - AW7.jpg
It looks like a step backwards, appearance wise.

    More information
    Changes
No express card and possibly no eSata.
Keyboard has been changed and should be similar to the island style one found in Clevo notebooks and others. This should also affect how AlienFx looks and functions compared to previous models.
New lid design with light strips.
New base is more blockier in design, old speaker grills are gone and now the front is flat with some speaker lines.
    Touchpad lights up completely.
Cooling? Remains to be seen, will update as we get more info.
Option of IPS FHD display in all 3 models.
Aluminum build for all 3 models though some parts will undoubtedly be plastic - we'll see and update.

Glad about the Aluminium Build, it'll add a nice touch, would be good if they offer all black too.
Not sure about the new island syle keyboard. And I was sort of hoping they made the bezel smaller.

I think they still look good. Prefer the keyboard on my M17x R2 though. I want to know hardware specs and prices!!

I already stated that I saw this after posting the thread. But this was in the general Alienware thread. I never look in there since it doesn't really interest me, as it included models other than the m17x. I just think it'll still be useful informing the M17x users who, like me, only look in the M17x thread.

The m14x's ethernet port is usually on the right, and the m17x's is usually on the left.

I don't like the new keyboard design. The thing that strikes me most about the m17x r3/4 is the keyboard, it looks great. The new one looks like any other clevo / sager. Makes quite a big difference.

I get that they're trying to make the design less over the top, but they could have kept the keyboard at least! But I don't think the lit up sides, or the flashier screen make it look less understated.

If you look closely at the other pictures, both the M17x and the M18x have an ethernet port on the right. Good for the minority who are known as the lefties. But not for the rest of us.

I still think the existing design looks much better, i am planning on getting the new one but if it looks like this i might just get a R4.

It would be pretty silly buying the R4 now, since haswell and the new generation of gpus will be out, even though the 8970m and the 7970m are pretty similar anyway. It's exceptionally hard to justify buying a laptop solely on the way it looks, and not taking into account hardware. Also the haswell cpu's seem to provide much longer battery life.

It's usually better buying the newer thing when it comes to tech in general. I would highly recommend choosing the 8970m over the standard gpu, or getting the gtx780m if it's not too much more. You'll find out which one is better for you when the pricing comes out in a week or so (8970m vs gtx780m).

You honestly can't choose a lower quality screen, older cpu and an older gpu over the newer stuff just because the physical appearance isn't as good. It'll grow on you :p
Unless the prices of the r4 drop by quite a bit, and that really appeals to you that much more than paying full price for the r5.

You have a very valid point there, i will wait it out till the 10th. I would suffer in the longer run, after you posted i did a bit of reading online and the new hardware is 30-50% more efficient than the current one and i would be a fool to pay almost the same amount of money for the R4 now.
