Does the Alienware 17 R1 have an upgradable GPU?

Currently has a GTX 780M, but looking to upgrade. Need to know asap!

    Thanks!

Yes, you can upgrade to the 970M or 980M. They will need modded drivers which you make by extracting the .exe from Nvidia into a .zip using 7Zip, then you paste a modded .inf file into the driver. You'll also need to have driver signing disabled in Windows. There are hardware/OS restrictions as well, do you have the 60Hz or 120Hz screen? Windows 7 or Windows 8.1? Send a PM to woodzstack on here when you're ready to buy one, his are the best you can get. :D

The r1 can take any of the 4 gen mq or mx processors. So 4700mq, 4710mq, 4800mq, 4810mq, 4900mq, 4910mq, 4930mx, or 4940mx will all fit

8.1 if you want to run off the dedicated GPU exclusively.

With the 120hz screen you can run the 980m in dedicated. Optimus won't run in 120hz because the Intel integrated gpu is disabled so it will only be using the 980m. So you'll have to run windows 8.1 since window 7 won't boot in uefi mode. But it will work. If you get a 4930mx or 4940mx CPU in you got pretty much the the most powerful laptop on the market with exception to dual gpu laptops and ones that use desktop CPUs.

Is it just me or does the thread title makes the OP feel a bit impatient?

apparently you can switch to optimus if you set the panel two 60hz but i haven't tried at all.

the tech spec page for the intel CPU says it support LVDS and EDP so 60hz via EDP is possible with the intel GPU, just not 120hz....that's the theory.
