    A04 --> A08 flash instructions:

"6. While holding the END key plug in the power cord in the back. You need to keep holding the END key till the laptop shuts down after beeping for a while. (60 seconds or so total time). It will start up and shut down once or twice after that automatically, just wait for this to finish."

"7. When this cycle is finished and laptop stays shut down, just put the battery back in, and hit the power button. Once the system boots remove USB stick and test throttling and 3D if you have it."

Hey there, i'm a total Noob at this stuff but I'm learning as I experiment with my M17x R3. I'm loving all the help on these forums. I've spent the last week trying to figure out this throttling problem.

I looked and review all the options and decided to go with the blind flash method. I followed it to the "T". Everything went well and I believe the throttle is removed BUT... When I held the end key and plugged in the power chord the computer beeped for a while and then shut off and on for a while like 7-10 min. By then I just let the end key go and the computer shut down. I held down the end key the whole time 7-10 min.

I put the battery back and pressed the power button it turned on and off a couple of times and then booted up like normal with the A08 Bios installed. I believe the Flash went well BUT I just want to know if that was normal that it didnt shut down completley when holding the end Key like you mentioned it would.

    Thanks

People have different experiences but looks like you got it. What you should do is play a game like Skyrim or BF3 and monitor your temps. If you go past 65C with no change in performance, you are fine.

Hey, Thank you for the input. I've had a few nights of extensive testing and fun.

This M17x R3 is my first big investment in PC gaming. I'm overall happy with it BUT I was disappointed the FPS I was getting on some games (BF3 and GTA IV ICenhancer)

I really thought I was buying a super powerful machine, after all it did cost $4000 fully loaded with 3D 2860QM 580m 16 gb ram etc.

I didn't really know a whole lot about overclocking until I started readying these forums. I stumbled upon the power throttling problem at 65C. Then it finally made sence this computer was being HELD BACK!

After the Bios blind flash the problem is gone. I'm able to get the results that I thought this laptop should have achieved given the price tag. So thank you all for the great tips and guides on how to get this laptop working as best as possible.

    My results:

BF3 (High SSAO) 65-75 fps: OC 753-1770-1506 stable

GTA IV ICEnhancer 2.0 35 fps: OC 755-1770-1510 stable

    BFBC2 3D medium 40 fps: OC 755-1770-1510

Temps after 2 hrs of gaming Max 76C - I have the Cryo LX cooler which is perfect for this laptop.

Please comment and compare results of OC. Is the OC I'm using too high, should it be higher (any higher for me I get lock ups).

Any additional info would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Your OC's are decent and within usable limits :)

Well, that's all good news. I agree with Brother widezu69, your clock speeds are decent. You're getting good results and those settings should work fine for you.
What are your GPU temps looking like while gaming? Assuming you are still running at stock .87v, that's about the ceiling for clock speeds without upping the voltage. There's not a real need to do that unless you're interested in chasing numbers with benchmarks. But, the lockups if you try going higher are normal at .87v and there is nothing wrong with your system.

Thanks guys, I'm still running the stock .87 V.

So with the .87 V, the highest you OC is around the 750-1500-1800 range???

Anything above that you would have to have the .92V correct??

From the recent rash of fried 580m's running at .92v, i'd avoid that if you want your 580m to last.

If you really wanted to run at .92v, i'd only run it at .92v temporarily...perhaps while benching. But then flash back to .87v for everyday

Thanks Wide, I think I have this laptop finally dialed in!!

OC 750/1770 for all my games. I would still like more performance but I think that's all this laptop can do with the .87v.

Do you think the 680m will be available to for the m17xR3?????

The 680m will be somewhat crippled in the R3. It uses the new MXM 3.1 standard. This means that it runs PCIe 3.0 x16 bandwidth as opposed to PCIe 2.0 x16 like what we have now. It won't make a huge difference and it will be backwards compatible but I'm not sure how it will handle overall. The good news is that we will see the return of the square shaped GPU die.
