Figured out it's my 7970m that's the problem. Considering the cost of replacing it, I probably won't bother. Now for the time being though, stuck on the onboard graphics. For some reason, it won't recognise my external monitor when I connect it now via HDMI, does onboard graphics not support external monitors?

You may want to uninstall the AMD display drivers and reinstall the Intel HD Display driver.

Or it could be something as simple as Win+P and try one of the four settings there.

Intel HD4000 (ivy bridge is supposed to support 3 displays total, IIRC. Sandy bridge Intel HD3000 and earlier were 2 displays total, IIRC) definitely supports an external monitor.
