Howdy
I just sold my M17X R1 Gtx 280m Sli because of fan noise and the bad screen it came with. I was wondering if it's the same fans used in all M17X models? And I was wondering how fast your fans runs when having the 5870 CrossfireX. On my old 280m Sli it switched between 3850-4150 RPM when gaming. I find the 3200 RPM to be acceptable and everything obove this upsets every person I showed it to, and they didn't understand how I could put up with that noise. Since the 5870x2 are more powerful hopefully they don't get even more loud?
I will be using the laptop outside of my home ONLY, not at home, so can't be as loud as a Boeing 474. If not then it seems the G73jh is more of a laptop for me.![]()

If you game without doing any cooling modifications, yes the fans get loud. My wife wont let me game near her either.
I doubt, however, that they will be any louder then the 280m SLI settup you had. And I can't vouch for how loud the G73JH is, since I never owned one.
If you are absolutly desperate to keep noise down, I've gamed with my m17xR2 in power saver mode and it never got louder than idle fan speed. Levels take a very long time to load, and some grafics settings need to be bumped down, but it works really well when you need to game silently. -
So yeh the fans can get loud however as compared to the other notebooks the overall load temps will be lower and the M17r2 also has overall better performance headroom.
So if those are acceptable fan speeds for you then yeh that should be all good chiefs.
The R1s with 280ms do get quite hot and also equate to loud rpm fan noise. 4k rpm and above I agree is very loud and it is much better when being in the low 3k range. I too find those speeds equate to acceptable noise levels when gaming. So in the end its up to you chiefs.
Using thermal pads = 0.5mm for the 5870s and
thermal paste such as Shin Etsu or MX-3 or Tuniq T4-X are your best bet for the GPUs and CPU. They will substantially lower the heat and higher temperatures. Other mods such as copper shims and retention clip mods can also be applied.
Good Luck.

Just becareful with the retention mod one member cracked his GPU die I would rather do the copper shim.

I am actually considering getting the dual 5870 and the RGB screen if ALL games are at 3300 RPM or less after changing paste and/or pads. Will have to buy on ebay though, as all the cheapest settings with dual 5870 in Norway cost like $5000 on Dell. Got $2200 saved up now
Also, I checked the G73JH forum and there it seems like they get the best results using IC Diamond 7 on a single 5870, some places they say they get a 20C difference, wouldn't it work good on M17x too then? -
So far playing MOH Tier 1 and FIFA 11 today. These are my current in game temps and fan speeds.
Using Tuniq TX-4 thermal paste.

That's like SUPER SILENT comparred to 4000 RPM!!!!
Guessing less intensive GPU games like Oblivion and Fallout 3 will run at that too!
And about the thermal paste, seems like the G73 runs at way higher temperatures at like 105 C. Saw 2 people going from 107 to 77C with IC Diamond 7. Some people also said it's not the thermal paste, but how it's applied that really makes the difference in temperatures.
As you maybe remember Reborn I bought my M17X R1 from NDC, a company that refused to talk to me after I broke the warranty sticker on the back of the laptop. If I have Dell warranty, is this also broken by appying thermal paste? Say I break one of my graphics cards or something, will they help at all? -
Yeh I gathered the ASUS notebook would be running at much higher temp ranges since it doesn't rev up its fan speed as much as the M17x does. So much hotter and higher temps for lower fan noise.
Yeh some games just aren't that intensive LOL.However also note my max fan RPMs there. They do hit that at some stage in game as well. So during intense gaming scenes and most other intensive games they will most likely max out at 3300rpm. They will blow around that speed during most of the other intensive games.
Yep I remember you chiefs.
If you buy from dell it will be fine. As long as you don't break anything changing the thermal paste and pads are AY Okay. LOL.
Just keep all the old stuff like pads for when you need to RMA or get serviced.
Application of thermal paste should be fine. As long as your not putting too much on or too little then the difference will depend ultimately on the paste that you use. So far I have experienced that Shin Etsu and TX-4 to be the best and yield me the lowest idle and max load temps. AS5 is also pretty good. Also if your not happy with the temps and you see others are yielding much better temps than you are then I would suggest just try doing the paste again. I have done it many many times now in the search for the best results. It is annoying yes but if you hate fan noise like me when not gaming then yeh its the best way. So in conclusion yeh its a bit of both. If you are using a well known top thermal paste product however apply it wrongly then it may not yield you the best possible results. So just give it another go.
We are talking about a few degrees and sometimes even up to 10-15 degrees difference when correctly applying the thermal paste or not. So it is worth while to give it a few goes to get it right. Also using the right sized thermal pads will also help aid better heatsink to mem chip heat transfer. Just make sure to check side on whether the contact is looking tip top or not touching properly.
All the best chiefs.

Yup, All stock pastes are garbage, but enthusiast pastes can be similar. They all do well Just some do better than others I have used lots of pastes over my lifetime and have never been impressed like I was with Tuniq/Shin-etsu I only prefer Tx-4 because its not as expensive as shin etsu, but delivers similar or better performance. Lol BTW I don't work for Tuniq i'm sure some ppl might think that because how hard I push it on this forum. I just love the stuff.
Need help from 5870x2 Owners!
