Hello all, I have an issue commonly discussed on this forum - upgrading gtx 260m in my m17x to gtx670m. (I believe my m17x is an R2).

Problem is Windows7 only recognize the new card as a generic VGA adapter. I've done pretty extensive research including trying solutions described in several threads on this forum (like here http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/654010-nvidia-gtx-670m-how-can-i-get-install.htmls).

Tried several driver versions (with modded .ini). Tried have disk method described in one of the threads. Despite all my efforts I can't get any Nvidia drivers to recognize and install the new card (Altho Nvidia autodetect app does detect it as 670m). After two days of research and pulling my hair out I'm about ready to give up but maybe there's something that I'm still missing. Thanks in advance.

Not if you are running 260M cards in it. You just have a M17x(R1) you will not be able to run the 670 cards with your model MOBO/BIOS.

Now you can run up to 5000 series AMD cards in your system with minor drawback, sorry for the bad news otherwise. (I have same laptop as you, view SIG).

Ack thanks anyway. If I could also trouble you to be a bit more specific which upgrade card you recommend? Also I'd prefer to stick with nvida - I know Alienware doesn't officially support anything beyond 280m but I've seen reports of people using newer nvidia cards and one of their techs recommended as much (unofficially). Thanks again!

Considering i have never tried to upgrade my GPU cards in my m17x (R1) i can not support that with my own experience, i have only read on this site "guides" that will take you step by step through such upgrades, and from what i recall it was a 5000 series AMD card. Use the search bar on this site and type in key words and maybe it might come up, i would provide such links if i had them, but i don't, sorry.

Have you tried disabling the hybrid and integrated gfx? Does it work that way?
