R3 is not a dual card machine. You can only have one gpu.
The card ranking for r3 is:
    1: GTX 580m
    2: 6970m
    3: 6870m
    4: GTX 460m

    as a comparison
    6870m = downclocked 5870m.
    5870m is better than 6870m
ATI have renamed their cards so the '9' serie in gen 6 supposed to be the successor of the '8' serie in gen 5.

    Now to the real thing.
6870m to 6970m = about double the performance
6870m to 460m = very similar performance minor downgrade.
6870m to 580m = about double the performance
6 970m to 580m = not confirmed yet, but expect about 10-15% better performance.

I think it is rather easy to upgrade the gpu in a R3, as you can reach it from the bottom of the laptop.

M17x R1/R2 is rather hard, as you need to pry up the hindge cover.

R3 is more like the M15x in upgrading style, that is a big advantage. The M15x teardown video on youtube is more relevant for upgrading the R3 than the M17x R1/R2 video. If you watch the teardown video for M15x, you will have a clear picture of what needs to be done ;)

I think you would have better luck finding a 6970M, not to mention it would probably be half the price. But if you have patience and $$ I'm sure you can find a 580M in time :)

You can buy one from Dells sales department. They usually sell all the spare parts, so I am about 90% sure they can sell you one.

Considering that it just came out it'll be a bit before it comes to Ebay.

I confirm that so far Dell does not sale the 580M separately. I think the card is too new and they have a minimum stock, just enough to sell with the systems we configure... I've been on the chat twice today with Canada and US and they were unable to sell me one... Maybe they did not want too, but the think is that both sales rep told me that it is not available?! I just wanted to check out of curiosity.

yes i tried the day the GPU came out, and the rep said, that once i comes into stock it will be available, just need to check every now and then, i would assume around October you will be able to get one easily. Plus i think the R3 is going to be around for a while since the r4 will most likely be ivy bridge. the r3 will see the i7 2x40qm/xm processors and if nvidia wants to release a GTX 585m GPU. So im waiting a while to upgrade stuff since its gonna be along time. no need to spend the extra since you never know when you will run into this stuff
