    Hey guys,

I've got an M17x-r3 with the 460m card. I downloaded the beta 285.62 drivers from the Dell website and they do not work. It's giving me the compatibility error message.

Any ideas what could be causing this? How do I fix?

    Thanks

u need a modded inf for the install to work, you can download one here. make sure to just download the inf which is the link in orange. After you get the inf, place it it in this folder: C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\285.62\WinVista_Win7_64\International\Display.Driver

now just run setup from the international folder and you should be all set :) hope this is easy to follow

Wow, that is just stupid. These are DELL released NVIDIA drivers for crying out loud, not the ones I downloaded from the NVIDIA website. The installer should work without needing to mod any files.

    Appreciate the instructions though. Thanks

P.s. Upon reading your post again, bigtonyman, I don't know if you understand which drivers i'm referring to based on the folder location you mentioned. I downloaded mine from: Notebook BETA Driver (NV)

your better off downloading the drivers off the nvidia site as they are more current and will improve performance greatly in games such as BF3 and the witcher 2

I understand where you're coming from. I was hoping the Dell Beta drivers would work for me as well. The only reason I don't use the nvidia drivers with a modded .inf is because everytime I've tried to run drivers like that optimus completely stops working and my computer stays in integrated graphics mode no matter what I do.

Glad to know I'm not the only one experiencing this.

I looked at the requirements for the install on the Dell website and it just mentions the computer model, not necessarily the video card model.

I wonder if the beta is meant for the newer 5xxm cards.

I used the modded inf one of the guys on here created. I can't remember his screen name, but it's one of the one's that usually does the inf modding. I've tried multiple versions of the nvidia drivers(all with modded inf's) and they all install fine, but like I said optimus just stops working, completely. I have no problem with the dell version of the nvidia drivers for the 460m, so that's why I was hoping the new beta drivers would work. Oh well.

use the infs from this site and you shouldn't have a problem. click on the green button and put it in the nvidia file. This works for me and it should work the same for you as well ;)

Will this modded file also work with the M17xR1 GTX 260m SLI?

I'm skeptical of using the modded inf file from the site you linked...

I did a windiff on the inf file you linked and the one that came with the Dell-released NVIDIA drivers. There are huge differences in the makeup of the file. I'm not even talking about a few lines added here and there, but missing sections, different data altogether.

What exactly does the nvwi.inf file do?

The .inf files just tell the installer what to install for a particular graphics card (based on device ids).

Laptopvideo2go's forums are a very long serving resource for modified .inf files for cards that are no longer included in Nvidia's drivers or for modifying desktop drivers to run on mobile cards.

Usually not an issue grabbing the .inf files from laptopvideo2go, just read the thread for that particular version and you should get some good feedback.
