hello comm,
So anyway's as some of you know I bought a faulty AW M17-R3 the problem was the "Black screen fault" everyone keeps posting about from their 580 cards.
I bought a 560GTX put it in the laptop an not had a problem since.
Anyways Now the laptop is working I was on the Dell site getting drivers an used the auto detect system tool which found my system! I then started looking into the history of this laptop an noticed it had full next day cover until Aug 2015!!!! So I called Dell an they confirmed after a talk on how I got the laptop an also in the progress of getting the laptop put under my ownership in Dell database the offered to send someone out to replace the faulty 580GTX an next day he was here.
Great fab Dell, Respect!!!!
So I got a new 580GTX totally free but my question now is how can I try to prevent this new 580GTX from falling fail to the same old black screen problems they are so known for..
Here is its info:

Does this card need the vbios update people have posted?

Good news. A lot of people do not realise how good the AW warranty is and just expect the usual -'What did you do to break it?' type response to a call.
The only thing you can do is stay on a good working driver and avoid the ones that overvolt. It's only a tiny OV but enough to kick an older 580m into touch. To check if the overvolt has returned run up HWinfo64 and game. Check out the max volts on the GPU. 0.87v is stock and 0.92v is overvolted. Also the max temp, I found that 72c (not high at all really!) was a cut-off point for problems.
You should not need the bios update, it will already be on a new card - it was on one of my replacements anyway.
All you can do is start saving. It could last for another year or so as long as you don't overclock it.
You might want to monitor the clock speeds as well, they are also notorious for throttling even when running cool - CPU clock drops to 405mhz and your game goes into 'treacle mode'.
Options:
1. Sell it with warranty and fully working - not a great idea until the new models land.
2. Put a 680m in it, a rock solid upgrade on the R3 but if you do not have a 120hz model it needs an unlocked bios as well as a modified driver file.
3. Put your faith in your favourite deity.

Yea its the 3D ready with the 120 hertz screen ;-)
ty for all the info I will get into this an run some checks.. I'd love to upgrade I still have my GTX560 an now this GTX580 could try to sell them to fund the new higher end gpuI duno..
I don't really want to sell this laptop as I don't really like AW newer models (is it the R5??) I think they did a fab job with the R3 an R4 models for M17
Have to see how it goes, thanks again always nice this forum. -

Haha, me neither, I've had the cash for a new one burning a hole in my pocket for over a year now. I see the R4 as becoming a classic, never selling it! It's officially an AW17 R1 for the new model.
The 680m is just awesome IMO. I have already overclocked it to 980mhz and the temps are rarely above 70c! The 780m is an option but many R3 owners have had audio issues that are tricky to resolve.
You will loose the 3D but 120hz works just fine. Most people don't care too much about this but I love the 3D gaming so much the only way it goes for me is 'from my cold dead hands' lol.
Edit: If you upgrade you need to keep the card dell put in in case of a future warranty call. My 675m sits in a drawer just-in-caseToXiCL33T likes this.
