New 780m GPU installed, now doing funny things

I installed a new 780m in my pc and everything works fine except when i play any game that has a heavy load on the gpu (assassins creed unity, Dying light, etc.) with the graphics settings set to ultra, everything runs perfect and smooth for exactly 10 seconds at a time, then drops FPS horribly for exactly 35 seconds, then is smooth for exactly 10 seconds, then laggs again for exactly 35 seconds. even if i drop the graphics settings way down, it will cycle through like that regardless of movement or anything on the screen. i can stand alone in a small room not moving and it will do the same thing on all games. i have attached a picture of the GPU-Z pic i took while it went though its cycles. you can see in the previous bar graphs what it was doing. Pretty easy to see that the core clock and memory clock are spiking for the exact amount of times that i lagg and are smooth. but why is it doing that? Any ideas or help would be great. thanks wtf.gif

Also, the max temp it ever got to was 79 even after playing with the crappy fps for about an hour, and i have the most recent 780m driver installed, although i tried a few different older drivers with the same results

Look at your cpu throttling meter. I had same situation with 880M and thought that the cards are throttling while they weren't. That was CPU and when CPU is throttling then cards are lowering it's clocks too. If it's not cpu install NvInspector and try Force p0 state trick.

    Command is - nvidiaInspector.exe -forcepstate:0,0
    Default - nvidiaInspector.exe -forcepstate:0,16

First command will force the card to stay on 3D clock. Second will revert to default state.

yea its deffinatly not a cpu throttle, it sits around 47% useage in game no matter the fps. ill try nvinspector

Better install something like Intel XTU that will show you exact CPU Throttle meter.

And im using Force 3D clocks on 880M while playing Warthunder because Gaijin didn't implemented SLI properly and GPU reverts to 2D clocks while playing.

picture attached shows the cpu spiking a bit with the fps. but its max utilization is only around 17% when the fps is good, then down to 7-9% when the fps is bad...

RLD in Unity LOL.I know what it means :D I have exact same one

I see that CPU is not the problem, try nvinspector trick. Also don't use fraps as it causes problems sometimes. Use MSI Afterburner OSD, it's lighter and have much more to show.

Ah and I almost forgot, if anything does not help try flashing modified bios for 780M from TechInferno Forums. I can download it for you if you want.

yea we wont mention that :x........... lol

i tried to do do the nvinspector thing but im either doing it wrong or it didnt do anything because... well... it didnt do anything....

all i did was go to properties and add -forcepstate:0,0 to the end of the path. then tried to start it but it doesnt start like it normally does.

Very odd. P0 state is max 3D clock. If I force P0 on my GTX 880M (same as 780M) I get full 953 MHz all the time no matter what. My last idea is modified vbios. Just make sure that It'll fit your card and backup your current BIOS on pendrive with nvflash --save backed.rom

Ah and you're using Mr Fox NV driver? Because it's a must.

If that doesn't help you have to ask someone else because I've run out of ideas. Good luck with your 780M. My upgrade was flawless if you ask me but I have M18xR1.

One last thing. Mark the Nvinspector to "Run as Administrator" in compatibility tab. Also make sure you use MR Fox GeForce driver.

Hi, Just an 'out there' suggestion (although the stuck clock is very strange). Run Services.msc and disable the nvidia streaming service and network service. Unless you are doing video capture or streaming to a hand-held you do not need them and they have been known to cause slowdowns. It buffers the output for instant playbacks.

    Good luck

as im watching the numbers on gpuz it seems that theres common temperatures causing it to throttle up and down. it will throttle up to normal core speeds for a brief time, only until it gets to 78C then it will throttle down untill it gets to 62C... no matter how long that takes. so if i give it lots of air to breath it drops to 62c quickly and throttles up. but if i cover the fan port (with a blanket) it never gets down to 62c, it hovers at about 68c and it will never throttle back up. interesting...

Your psu is 180w or 240w?
If it is 180w you should by 240w one, maybe it can´t supply enough power.
    Good luck.

i got a program where i can control my fan speed and i put them at max speed. was hoping it would keep my temp down to 78c so it would run smooth. well you can see it is running well above the temp and not throttling.... im just so confused.

What the heck man your GPU got 93? WTF?!?!

Do repaste now and clean the fans if you don't want it to die in 3 months. Do not do tests like this or the card will die fast.

Depends on the original GPU? The lower models were supplied with a 180w PSU and causes problems with the 100w cards.

Look at the output on the label. Amps x volts=watts

I have the same problem, i upgraded from the 760m to the 780m and i do have the 240 PSU 120hz 3d screen, heres a pic. When the gpu voltage drops so does the FPS. I'm wondering if the sl7 vbios would help this but not to familiar with flashing the card bios

Wouldn't the voltage drop naturally anyway tho? Like if you are putting a load on your gpu it's going to use a higher voltage right? But if it's throttling itself and dropping it's clock it would naturally drop voltage as well when it does this. Doesn't point to a voltage problem nessisarilly. ..????

flash the unlocked vBIOS and also check your PSU.. 240W model should be enough to prevent throttling..

    Hey,

He meant the unlocked vbios that I gave you. Check your PSU also. I didn't know that the M17x series have different PSU. Check your power supply, look at the Volts and Ampers value. Do V x A and check if this gives 240W. If not you have to buy 240W power supply because gpu can throttle. 780M is about 103W GPU so you know.

I've run out of ideas. You have to ask someone more experienced.

Try installing msi afterburner and there you have graphs "Utilization Limit, Power Limit, Thermal Limit, Etc etc" check which one is turning to 1 when your card downclocks

i have run out of ideas too so in desperation i tried mr fox's driver that you mentioned earlier. i thought for just a second it was gonna work but then i keep getting grey screens of death and keep getting a little notification that says the nvidia driver crashed and recovered every few mins.... it did however allow my card to go over 78c without throttling.... too bad it crashes constantly.... seem like to me that its gotta be a driver issue then..... right? so im downloading all the drivers i can get my hands on with modded inf. files to work with my pc and hope one of them finally works......

Everything I read in this thread suggests the GPU is defective. I recently upgraded an M18xR2 from 680M SLI to 780M SLI and one of the new video cards was defective. It is not common, but does happen. If it has a warranty, I would seek a replacement GPU.

Just tell them the truth. No need to elaborate. (1) GPU clocks are getting stuck in 2D mode when gaming, (2) throttling, (3) system unstable with TDR problems (driver stops responding and recovers message in system tray, and screen turning gray. Upon hearing that they should have no problem swapping it for a good one. If you do not have the original vBIOS on the card, I would recommend putting that back so they have nothing to complain about or make them suspicious of you somehow causing damage (which you have not).
