Got some scoop. Nvidia:
Details on upcoming 28-nanometer graphics solutions from Nvidia
And another chart detailing Nvidia and AMD:

Looks like the GTX 680m will have 2 versions. 2GB and 4GB![]()

4GB is alot for a notebook!
-
Nice choice of words, you said "a lot" but no mention of "too much" because there is never such as thing as too much
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
i saw that..but wasn't impressed..next gen AMD Wim Xt only gets 15500 in vantage. I get almost 17k now. So either that's wrong or these cards are just a slight update over what there is now...plus its still only DDR5. i guess i'm going to have to wait for the XDR2 if it ever comes to mobile versions
-
Well those are stock clocks. I'm sure they can OC way higher than 17k. Just look at the top nvidia card! 21k @stock!
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
ya, for sure they'll be overclockable, but overall, they look like a slight bump up and nothing major. Something similar from a 6970 to 6990
-
Yeah true not that impressed with AMD's lineup. Nvidia's looks good though.
-
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
hmm wonder how much the nvidia cards are gonna cost though, probably an arm, a leg, and then some
-
4gb isn't much really. In the future, we'll have triple gpu and dual socket cpu laptops.
Around 2020.
Don't forget the spare kidney. -
Erm, I don't think I have seen a game use more than 1GB.... The only way you'll reach more than 1GB is some insane texure pack work. Therefore 4GB is very pointless.
Once the next gen consoles come out - PS4/Xbox 1080 (lol) only then we might see the need for more vram.
Also; why can't AMD make a more powerful mobile card for once.
-
I've got a pair of all of those. I can get by with just one arm, leg and kidney. In all seriousness, I've sold my M15x so I have some money. Was gonna look at a potential IPS mod but I may wait for the 4GB 680m GTX. Hoping that it won't be exclusive to Ivy Bridge models. Looking forward to Dell prepping bios A09 with 3D support

Three high resolution screens and your 4Gb won't be useless
-
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
I think I might be better off just getting the better CPU, GPU and A better screen as well. AKA a New laptop
-
Nah, doubt that. By that time we'll have 20 core laptop CPU's + dual GPU at max along with 8 core mobile phones and tablets. Almost sure laptops would diminish by 2020(2025)
anyways, pretty nice performance chart! Nvidia is ahead as usually, but there's no way to be sure right now. You know you don't have to trust graphs before the actual release
The only downfall for me was the lack of XDR2 memory for AMD, but it was rumored that even desktop GPU's could get different from 7900 names) tempting... -
Well we're starting to see the 2048 x 1536 screens filling the gap between 1080p and 2560 x 1440. Hopefully we'll see that resolution in 17.3 and 18 inch screens. I've filled up my 2GB vram when running texture mods for some games. Larger vram also benefits lod range for example if BF3 was patched to have a much longer view distance, long enough so looking down a sniper scope, you'd see full detail. That would use up vram too.
-
Aye, but it all comes down to textures. Most PC games are ports from consoles, and consoles barely have any vram. Like I said, either insane texture packs or next-gen console ported games will make use of 2GB+ of Vram
Besides, three screens connected to a laptop... are you serious? Hope not.
Overall it's nice to have more vram for insane texture packs and draw distance [which will slow your card down anyway w/ AA and AF in mind leading you to turn settings down ._.], I just prefer a more powerful card in general, what AMD are offering from the 7000m series (if that's true) is pathetic. -
I can See Far enough though in BF3 with 12x optics how much more do you wanna see? just turn on thermal optics and you'll see everything.
-
Looks like i will have to throw my R1 out of the window then, soon.. And i could probably throw the wallet with it..There will be nothing left in it
- Scott. -
I'm just giving a hypothetical example. When I glance through a sniper scope, the textures lack AF and the shadows are limited. I was just saying that if all graphics objects are loaded as far as the eye can see then it would make use of the 4GB vram
-
hehe reminds me of this situation...
hopefully we've learned since then.
about the new line up, holy smoke nvidia!
way to burn! i'd love to see one of those in action for 20k +!
and sli? zzzzzZZZ -
vantage is not a best benchmark to show real performance dif against our cards. Anyway if this will work in R2, then we will have CF-RGB heaven.
SWEET
-
I hope this come out soon, so I can get a refurbished M18x with SLI GTX 580M for less than $2000

Sure, but not all and others don't only play games on these systems.
Yes, I am. -

OH MY GOD! This is horrible/amazing! I can't keep up! My 460m is feeling like an 8600 GTS :O
Hopefully it won't be exclusive to Ivy Bridge........ I am not buying another laptop within 1 or 2 years -
Not only they will be faster but they will be much cooler which is great for laptops
-

I don't think the 460M is showing its EOL anytime soon. If you do, you make me feel my 6990M is going to EOL as well lol...
-
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
well i'd take a 6990m, its 40% faster
-
I hope 7000 will fit to R2
-
I agree. If (or should I say when...
) I decide to upgrade my GPUs in the future, it will be to these guys. Hopefully they'll play nicely with our system.
-
-
will it work with my R3?
-
And boom someone asks the obvious question
The real answer is that no one knows.
-
We dont really know as m17x r4 will have IVY bridge (i think) so whole laptop will have complete diff specs than r3 at the moment. So there may be some issues (fan/sleep etc).
But if dell decides to put 7xxx and 6xx as a refreshment to r3, then yes, PLUG & PLAY !!! -
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
yup that's the real question. I hope we see some answers in the near future though we ill prob have to wait till CES or something to find out for sure.
grrr I hate waiting
-
It wont i bet

Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
Based on the release date, it is only for rebadged chips first for low and mid-end solutions. Wimbledon is what most people here are interested and we don't know yet quite frankly when they will be released.
-
-
well, the rep I was talking during my purchase, he repeatedly claimed that gtx 600m will be compatible with R3, what are the chances he was telling the truth?
-
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
Grain of salt. -
Probably just trying to keep interest so we buy more products.
