Didn't see this posted anywhere and wrext0r made me aware of it over on the A17 owners lounge thread. There's new R9 M290X drivers on Dell's support site. CLICK HERE

    It's available for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1...not Windows 8 :(

I haven't applied this driver because I'm running the AMD catalyst 14.4 drivers straight from AMD. I will do some testing later tonight and see if there is any difference in performance. On that, if you want to recommend me a quick benchmarking software, I'm all ears!

Why would you use older drivers from Dell? That doesn't make sense to me.

Both AMD and NVIDIA release new drivers on their own site. Dell is behind because they have to test them.

True. I guess some folks want "official release" drivers. But, as you said, I'll always run the latest from the manufacturer's website.

And for me, I'm just curious to see the performance difference between the two.

Likely nothing, but a good first set to install before putting the latest over the top.

As J.Dre pointed out, DELL has to make sure that the drivers are working before we throw them out to the general public.
You are more than welcomed to use the ones from NVDIA or RADEON. Just keep in mind that the Beta drivers could or could not be subject to more frequent crashes.

I'm not saying to completely avoid using the Dell driver, but I would definitely recommend testing the newer one first. New drivers usually have optimizations over previous versions for the latest games and whatnot, which should ultimately provide you with the best gaming experience. If you have issues, the Dell driver is like a "backup" that has been tested. Something to fall back to, if you will.

This is different for AMD and NVIDIA, though. NVIDIA driver support is far beyond that of AMD's. 95% of the time, the NVIDIA drivers through NVIDIA's website will be better and perform well. As they are WHQL certified, you don't have to wait for Dell to test them. But for AMD products, I'd say it's wise to test both, but the newer first.

So far I've been very happy with the direct drivers from AMD and haven't experienced any crashes or any other issues. I was just letting all the wonderful folks that run the AMD card, which is me and like one other person ;), that Dell has new drivers.

They both work well, sometimes the AMD drivers cause strange behavior (brightness stuck, freezes) but trying different driver versions always help. @OP Thanks for sharing!

No problem my friend! They only "annoyance" I have with the AMD direct drives is that they list my device as the HD8970m:

    HD8970M.PNG

Doesn't affect performance at all so it doesn't bother me.

You have to make sure that the games are set to "High Performance" for their graphics settings. You change this within AMD Catalyst Control Center under Power settings. Make sure your "Switchable Graphics Global Settings" are set up correctly (Plugged in: Maximize performance, etc.) and your "Switchable Graphics Application Settings" are set correctly.

I'm not so sure I would trust the auto detect deal. I would just go to AMD's site and download the 14.6 drivers: AMD Catalyst 14.6 Beta Driver for Windows

It will show up as the HD8970M after you install those drivers. I've had no issues to speak of with them!
