can I ask, has anyone installed a 2TB 2.5" hdd in the new AW 17 and does it fit due to the extra thickness ?
I ask as im selling off my gaming desktop and moving soley to my laptop as my wife requires the dining room back and I need all the extra space I can get.![]()

Yes it does. I bought the 2TB Seagate backup drive and pulled the HDD out and fitted into my M17. No difficulty and no problems.

I still thinking about the setup for my next laptop. I will most likely get a 512GB mSATA for the OS and my work and I would like another 3TB for my movies and games. How I set up that 3TB is what I am undecided about.

Yup the Seagate M9T drives will work perfectly...

True, you shouldn't have any issues with that drive. -
@frozensolid. OP is talking about the Alienware 17, 2013 / 2014 Model, not the Alienware M17 you are referring to that existed many many moons ago.

You can get standard thickness 2tb drives now I thought?

My computer was purchased in September 2013. While it is not the latest version there is no difference in the drive spaces. -
So your computer is not an Alienware m17. It is an Alienware 17.

Actually I am pretty sure my invoice stated M17 which is where I think I got the abbreviation or possibly it was repetition from the previous 17s but you are correct it is more accurately an AW17.

Or you can do what I have done with my Alienware 17

jubilant I like the look of your 17"
although if I bought a new computer now I would go with a 512GB mSATA. Unfortunately though I need my Blu-ray / DVD drive so RAID'ing up three 1TB SSDs is not an option.

There are a lot of dvd / blu-ray external enclosure options out there. You can even get an external blu-ray writer for about $60-$70. That is what I have and I must have used it 2 times since I got it (more than 8 months).

I'm similar, I only really use digital downloads now so I rarely use my ODD.

Just Check out my signature 4TB and a SSD

Yeah and that is possibly one way for me to go. I am not sure it is right though because I carry my computer to work everyday and I must have access to a DVD player / recorder at work and a Blu-Ray player at home. I guess two external drives would do the job and leave one at each location. I have got another few months before I will make a decision to buy a replacement and hopefully before then someone will start selling a 1.5TB SSD so I won't need to choose

rather mute point at the moment, the time is 23.55 right at this minute, and my laptop is dead after buying 3x 2TB Seagate M9T model drives for storage my son just over 2hrs ago spilt coke on my laptop. it shutdown and will not start....
I call dead board lol
so I now have to shell out another £250 for a board from ebay.
sorry for the delay in typing back, been sorting out my uni place and student finance and so on. -
^^^ And that's where the advanced warranty comes in handy

Sorry to hear that it must be really disappointing. I always get nervous if someone has any container with liquid in it directly over my keyboard.
Unless it is beer and they are in the process of passing it to me

Ouch, no one is allowed a drink near my machine except me, but then again no kids in our house so that's a lot easier to handle.
