I've had my M17x-R4 for almost 10 years now and have experienced most of the anomalies discussed (having to rebuild, losing the color schemes, corrupted profiles, updates killing me) and now my battery drains in about 15 minutes. I'm not sure if I'm beating a dead horse or should stay with it. It does appear that all my CPUs are still alive so maybe I should try a new battery? Can anyone recommend one?

Sounds like you need to do an fresh install as well. I have Win 10 on my mine and it runs really well. The only caveat is sound control. No matter what I do I cannot get the sound to run through headphones without it also running through the laptop speakers. My solution (which I wanted to do anyway) was to buy a Turtle Beach 450 wireless headset. This allows me to redirect the sound to a different device. Plus at home on my desktop I have killed a wired headset by rolling over the cable with my chair.

Back on topic. It's really up to you. If you are itching for a new laptop then go for it. I choose to stay with my old hardware for financial reasons, but that is just my situation.

What is your audio driver version now? Are you running Windwos 10 Creators update?

I don't have it in front of me. I am on Windows 10 Creators Update. Got it a couple of days ago. It would be cool if I could get that to work as it's the only thing that doesn't. I even found out last week why the lights for the sound buttons, etc didn't work. Turns out the previous own had not been careful and bent over 2 of the pins on that connection. I was able to straighten them and it works. So this is my last issue. I really like this laptop. My P170SM-A finally had to be put out to pasture. It was heavily abused, hit the concrete once when a dude stepped on my ethernet cable, etc. Case was busted all to hell. R.I.P.

Sorry to hear about the misfortune with your other laptop. In regards to the sound I always used Windows 8.1 audio driver on Windows 10 with no issues:
    https://downloads.dell.com/FOLDER01769585M/4/Audio_Creative_W814_X01_Setup-4T7P8_ZPE.exe

You can give this one a try if the sound is not working properly with the current drivers. Device manager shows the driver version as 6.0.100.2042, and the software give the access to the usual Sound Blaster control panel. I hope you will get the last issue ironed out soon.

Yeah me too. That Sager was a good machine. It was my work machine that went into factories with me. It got beat to hell. I am doing different stuff now and the work laptop is supplied, which is nice. I bring the Alienware for gaming when out of town. It's a very nice machine. Nicer than the Sager really.

Thanks for the link. I will try these drivers when I get back to the hotel.

Man, I really derailed this thread! Sorry, OP.

People are upgrading their AW R4 with GTX 1070 Cards, so if you like the notebook, then keep it, it's still very competitive.
