I want to go to 2560x1440. How can I go higher on this. The highest option available is the 1920 option

Just to make sure, you are connecting via the Mini DisplayPort? That's the only port on the laptop that will go higher than 1920

The M17x should have a HDMI 1.4 port and with a 680M you should in theory be able to drive a 2560 display from the HDMI port as HDMI 1.4 supports 4k. However that's in theory, I guess there are some limitations, the cable type and last but not least I highly doubt the display's HDMI port would support it. At least that was how it worked in ye old days, Dual-Link DVI was the only option until DisplayPort arrived. So best bet is to go with the DisplayPort as it should undoubtedly drive the display on its full resolution. Assuming your Dell display has a full DisplayPort make sure to buy a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable.

My Dell U2711 monitor shipped with both a Dual-Link DVI cable and a full DisplayPort-DisplayPort cable, although my other Samsung 27" didn't ship with anything but a VGA cable. I guess it depends on the manufacturer, region, and so on. However I've never heard of anyone putting in a Mini DP to DP cable.
