My friend just bought a M17x and while taking a look at it, I can see that the screen and the aluminium casing (guess) have a small gap on one side while on the other side they fit into each other . I tried to press it (thinking one or more attachments weren't fitted in correctly) but it still remains the same. Should this be a problem?

Secondly, he gets P11909 on 3D Mark Vantage. Is that correct? (i7-720 QM, 250 GB, XF 5870)

Also, I will be helping him out setting up RAID 0 (w/ 320 GB HDD). Is there anything special for the M17x that needs to be done?

Can you please post a picture of the casing you speak of?

Vantage Scores seem low. Make sure he has the latest drivers, BIOS, and VBIOS (thread on all of these on the first page in this sub-section). Once updated, run it again.

Setting up raid is easy, just make sure he enables raid in the BIOS then once the you save and exit, press CTRL-I to enter the raid set up menu where he can chose Stripe Size, name of volume, etc.

He will need to reformat after he sets up raid anyway, so look up Grim's post about the drivers he needs and everything else.

    Thanks Turmoil.

I will post a pic as soon as possible.

Btw, what should be the 3D mark vantage score be?

Is it on the top left side behind the screen where it touches the aluminum casing?? Well I have it too then. I guess it's normal?? It's like a cm or something.

Well, there is a difference of about 1/2 cm between the aluminium casing and the screen. The screen goes beyond the casing. If you run your finger at the right edge you feel the screen and the casing are not snug with each other. The left edge has no such problem.

Hopefully, the picture clears that bit. You can see the black screen protruding out. Sorry for the low resolution.

The pic is that of the left edge of the M17x screen. It is pushing out of the aluminium casing about 1/2 cm in the middle two third.

    The gap should be ok.

There is no chance of dust going inside the LCD screen itself. They are 2 separate parts. LCD screen is sealed by itself.

I wouldn't even think of calling it in and ask for replacement LCD if I were you. Most field tech will make bigger mess out of it.

I had tiny scratch on my unit, and decided to replaced it since I had complete care. Dell ended up replacing 4 LCDs, and 1 metal panel, and the black pastic piece, in about 5 trips.

My Alienhead power button currenty doesn't even light up, but I will live with it for now.

If you do decide to call it in you have to make sure the tech orders 3 things atleast.

The metal panel for the LCD

    The plastic black piece

Correct LCD - there are 2 types. WXGA, and WUXGA RGB

The field tech has to take the camera out from the old LCD also.

Your pic really doesn't do justice though. It doesn't look like there's anything wrong with it.

    Thanks Achilles.
I am advising my friend against it then.

Also, he did manage to get 13k on Vantage after a clean install. The max temperature was 84 degree C.
