I've been doing some reading and I hear each brand has a different procedure for when you first get the laptop. Well Fedex tell's me today my laptop is due to arrive and I wan't to make sure I have the right procedure down since I've never owned a laptop and last time I bought a new computer was 10+ years ago.

    1. I'll be using the full version of avast and I plan on installing it before it ever hooks up to the internet.
    2. Uninstall all crap software installed from the factory. (is this necessary? It is a gaming laptop so I'm not sure if it has the software most people get on a regular laptop.)
    3. Update all the drivers including windows updates.
    4. Make a backup of all files/recovery disk. (Although its supposed to come with a recovery disk I was going to make a backup on a flash drive of the files after installation of avast/games. Also if you could tell me the easiest way of going about this, someone told me to use Nlite?)
    5. Test all the software and check the specs to make sure I got what I ordered.

If I missed anything please let me know as this is my first laptop and I have already fallen in love and its not even here. Thanks!

    Intel Core i7-3720QM

    Nvidia gtx 675 m

I recommended you to update 7970m (cheaper and faster) if you make the order

When you get to the point where you want to make a back-up/image of your system, a lot of people are using the Alien Respawn that comes with the computer to do their image.

The order was placed already, The computer arrives today. I chose the Nvidia since my old card was an nvidia (geforce fx 5950 ultra) and the entire computer including graphics card still works 10 years later. I've never bought anything else but Nvidia so I just decided to stick with what I know.

Thanks! I will probably do the same thing.

The only discs it comes with are the Resource Disk (drivers, etc) and a Windows 7 disk for doing a Clean Install.

I would reccommend creating the Alien Respawn disk's before anything else, as they let you revert to the out-of-the-box state.

Also, make sure your graphics drivers are installed for youe Nvidia card. When my m17x arrived it did not have my 7970m drivers installed (no idea why, other people reported this too)

Also, mine didnt come with anything I would consider bloatware. So I uninstaleld nothing.
