    Hey guys,

So I finally recieved my replacement.

Using HWInfo32 I was shocked to discover my battery wear was already at 5.8%.

As reference my 1 year old M15x has a wear level of 0%.

    Is this normal?

OFFTOPIC :My charing cord blue led died too ... testimonial to Dell bulls*it quality. If i could just post a big warning on the night sky : STAY AWAY FROM DELL !!!

ONTOPIC :HWInfo32 mite be reading the battery wrong, try some other utility apps. If you get the same result it means they've sent you a used battery.

Laptop batteries in general are just garbage.

You use the machine 95% of the time on A/C, then the few times you actually need the battery, its life has deteriorated to the point where it's barely usable.

I'm really hoping battery research gets itself into high-gear this decade so we can have batteries that last 20+years with higher capacity. Pipe dream of course :)

yesterday i was looking at Dell touch screen small laptop that runs Windows 7
I was comparing it with iPad2
there are many advantages of using such device. but one of the major disadvantages was the battery life
supposedly Dell touch screen laptop battery last for 4 hours ( i am sure it will die after around 1 hour or 1 and half max)

note that iPad 2 battery lasts for 10 hours

I suspect that a low level of "wear" is normal. Mine is kind of similar (I think I have about 6 % "wear" on a very new-ish battery.) Batteries, unfortunately, are the weakest link in the whole technology chain. We depend on them heavily these days, but the technology is very hard to do well.

It happens. My replacement had battery wear and the original didn't. I merely swapped the batteries once the exchange was completed.

A new battery can indeed have wear since batteries lose their ability to hold their original capacity even if you don't use them. Dell's probably not going to throw a battery out if the wear is less than 10% (if they even check at all).

If you want something that competes with the iPad, get the asus eee pad transformer. It runs Android Honeycomb and gets up to 9 hours of battery life without its netbook dock (and up to 14/15 then).

Back on topic, @OP, I definitely don't think that's normal. I would check it with a couple other programs, and then notify dell if they all say the same. That probably means the battery was refurbished or they pulled it from a RMA system or something.

This is normal, I have had two M17x R3's from new, both came out of box with wear level from 3-5%.

Expect the M17x R3 battery to wear faster than most other laptops in the long term, if you are using battery power often. More likely even faster when under 30% to 70% load situations. The heat during battery discharge is extreme, and will kill the battery cells off fast

IIRC, mine was 7point-something% battery wear. When I cycled the battery a few times, it went down to wha it's currently at: 3%ish. Try cycling it a few times. Also, while we're on the topic of batteries, I'm not sure about the truth/validity of leaving your battery at ~50% when storing it. Mine's fully charged and it's in storage, and when I use it, it's still around 3% battery wear, and still about 5hours usage time. Not sure what leaving it at 50% does.

It is normal that we are talking about batteries
Do not let her down much. Example 4.4% wear, you discharge until 4%, you new level after this is 8~10%
    Your level will increase significantly

And the programs are not as accurate

How do you have a 6 month old R3? Your sig says R2...We are specifically talking about the R3.

    Hmm conflicting opinions on cycling...

I myself have tried cycling my battery before only to have it report worse wear. =(

Just got my M17X R3... battery wear is at 9.7%. :( I haven't discharged it yet fully, but it's draining really fast, even on IGP. I've been using it for less than 10 mins and it's already at 92% from 100%.

I think Dell owes me a new battery...

    Hijacking this thread. :p

My moms Inspirion 15R has an option to stop the battery from charging while on AC, I dont see this option on the R3 anywhere.

We have that button on F2 which has a battery icon on it, but it does nothing when you click it. It just has an onscreen popup that says battery enabled or something.

my battery wear was at 7% out of the box, my m11x is still at 2% wear after a year, my G73jw is weird, it seems to jump around abit, sometimes at 2% sometimes at 4%.

this is the worst wear i've seen yet, it shouldn't be so high imo.

I win! My battery wear on my HP is 70.2%, I've had this laptop for around two years. The battery is useless. If the power goes off you can see the battery slowly dissipating.

I've had my R2 for just under 9 months and the battery wear is 26%. It's been 26% for the last 2 months though and I don''t really remember having a longer battery life in the beginning. Maybe I just got a dodgy battery.

Anyway, download battstat and see what that says.

My R3 is at 0.0%, which is odd because I did use it on battery for a couple hours when I first got it.
