Official BETA NVIDIA 290.53 Display Driver Feedback Thread For NVIDIA Geforce Desktop/Notebook/ION
doesn't looks like a crucial upgrade as it just updates physx, and fixes the following:
[NVIDIA Control Panel]: After adding a game to the Manage 3D Settings profiles when it was not already detected by the driver, instead of the game name appearing in the profiles list, the path to the game appears.
[GeForce 9800 GTX]: 1080p resolution is not listed in the HD, SD section of the NVIDIA Control Panel Change Resolution page. [848805]
The display driver may send incorrect display timings to the monitor when the refresh ate is set to 60Hz, resulting in poor image quality. [908729/909942]
[GeForce 500 series] [The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim] : There is flickering/corruption in the game when CSAA is enabled. [897301]
[GeForce GTX 5 series][The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim] : The game experiences poor performance when using ultra‐quality shadowing mode. [898733]
[Battlefield 3]: There are triangle artifacts in the game. [877789]
[The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim] : Added Ambient Occlusion to the application profile.
[3DVision] [The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim] Added Skyrim Crosshairs to the NVIDIA
Control Panel‐>Set Up Stereoscopic 3D‐>Change 3D Laser Sight page.
I found the change sheet at Overclockers.com, so it might be just for desktop cards instead of laptop cards idk. I wil try to find out.![]()
Edit: looks like this is a list of all the changes for both laptop and desktop cards.

Any improve on Arkham City?
-
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
I don't have the game so I don't know for sure though.
-
Just a heads up, here is the actual link to the driver:
NVIDIA DRIVERS 290.53 BETA -
It says on the What's New - GeForce site that it improves the performance of Skyrim by up to 25%, depending on your system. Since I'm knee deep in that game right now, it's definitely a driver I want to install.
Already downloaded it but, I'm going to need a modded .inf. -
Will give a try to, but with mods and 4GB patch, Skyrim already works like a charm
-
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
Installed fine, Haven't had anytime to see if skyrim runs better yet though.
-
Skyrim does seem to run better, Riften seems to run smoother..
-
I didn't see any change in Whiterun
-
There isn't going to be an FPS improvement in-game unless you are currently bottlenecked at the GPU (which most people are not).
If you're seeing a slowdown in the cities, it is more than likely a CPU issue, in which case these NVIDIA drivers are inconsequential. -

Does it install easily on R1 280M SLI without modded inf?
-
-
guys, interesting, my BF3 temperatures increased but also the FPS increased after this driver, anybody has the same thing?
-
I hope someone releases a modded .inf file -
anyone can help us with the modded inf file?
-
Have attached the one I modded for the Dell 280M (Rev.A2).
If you have a different revision you may need to mod it yourself.
For the 280M it's pretty easy to mod yourself as the 285M is present in the .inf.
Look for the 060F lines, duplicate them and alter them to match the 280M (060A).
i.e.
copy %NVIDIA_DEV.060F.02% = Section011, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_060F&SUBSYS_043A1028
to %NVIDIA_DEV.060A.02% = Section011, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_060A&SUBSYS_02A11028
copy %NVIDIA_DEV.060F.02% = Section012, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_060F&SUBSYS_043A1028
to %NVIDIA_DEV.060A.02% = Section012, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_060A&SUBSYS_02A11028
copy NVIDIA_DEV.060F.02 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285M "
to NVIDIA_DEV.060A.02 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M "
The .02 is the revision number, the 02A11028 is the subsystem number you can get from device manager.Attached Files:

Anyone else see an improvement in Skyrim? My gtx560m get ~40fps in high settings with a mild OC.
-
That doesn't entirely fix my issue though - the installer now says that "Required files are missing". Does anyone know which files might be missing?
EDIT: ok, never mind actually, I fixed it. Thanks again! -
-
Simple, just look through the "nvdm.inf" document in notepad and use "CTRL + F" to search for "060F" and replace it with "060A".
That is all you need to do, once done just run setup.exe from the document and it is done.
(For reference, place the nvdm file in C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\290.53\WinVista_Win7_64\International\Display.Driver)
if you need any more help then PM me -
what do I do for it to work on 260m graphic card? I still get

same problem with the guy above me.

Could I please get a step by step guide on how to install these drivers?
I have an M17x R1 with GeForce GTX 280M x2 + GeForce 9800 in Hybrid SLI. Windows 7 64bit.
I've used the version 197.84 drivers (NVIDIA_NOTEBOOK-BETA-DRIVER-_P06_R273147) for the longest time because it's what I found to be most stable for what I do, but wonder if newer drivers will fix some new problems.
I downloaded the 290.53 drivers from the link in this thread and then replaced the nvdm.inf file with the one provided in this thread. I then tried installing after an uninstall my old drivers and then also by installing over the old drivers (after re-installing the 197.84). Both methods just don't work. Hard to describe, but the installation process completes but in Device Manager, the devices are not showing appropriately and the NVIDIA control panel is not present and I'm basically only getting the default Windows VGA drivers.
Thanks for any help. -

Follow these steps:
- Download the 290.53 nVIDIA beta drivers to your Desktop(or wherever you want)
- Double click and let them extract the files in the default directory (C:\NVIDIA)
- Press Cancel when it starts checking for hardware compatibility
- Download my attached archive and extract the two files
- Cut/copy them and paste in "C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\290.53\WinVista_Win7_64\International\Display.Driver"
And replace originals - Go back to the "International" folder and run setup.exe
- Continue performing normal installation steps, choosing Custom(Advanced)>Next>and check Perform a clean installation>Next and at the windows prompt choose Install...anyway
- Reboot when prompted and voila
- Don't forget to reenable SLi in nVIDIA Control Panel and reboot your system
- Enjoy!
Note for M17x (R1) users:
-Don't forget to turn off PCIe Gen2 in BIOS under Advanced > Graphic Settings.

Question though, what about the ASPM (L0s/L1) setting? I have this Disabled, I "think" because I felt I had stability issues with it on, but I've never researched this. Any advice? [Edit: I did some searching on this forum, and I think I find it recommended to keep this Disabled] -
katalin_2003 NBR Spectre Super Moderator
I had everything set to Disabled under Graphic Settings.
The first two options refer to the 9400M, i rarely used it anyway.
With those out of the way, you can forget about Dell's drivers
Glad it worked! -
You Rock Katalin...you r my HERO!! got my dual 260 gtx's rockin... now back to skyrim
-
Katalin is the man.
Thanks for the .inf's bro!

What is/are your graphic card(s)? -
NVIDIA GTX 460m
-
katalin_2003 NBR Spectre Super Moderator
Well, i see that the 460M is supported in the 290.53 drivers so you don't need to copy the files i modded and follow my steps.
Just uninstall your previous drivers, clean any remnants, download them from nVIDIA and perform a clean install.
That should work. -
Thanks once again for the files and instructions, many of us here would be lost without your help! I know you don't have your R1 any more but if you keep posting these guides it would be a great help.
I didn't personally get any improvements in Skyrim with these drivers but that maybe because I'd been using the 285.62's before.
One quick question though, what setting do you use for Phys X?
It normally defaults to CPU but I stick it on Auto, is this right?
Thanks. -
Rabble rabble rabble.
Deleted all traces of drivers that I could find and redownloaded. Passed compatibility check and started installing normally. Got further into the install this time, but it is still hanging at the very end at Installing 3D vision driver. Ugh.
Rabble rabble rabble. -
Thanks man, just like the other dude said. We would be lost without you.
-
Personally, after I delete whatever Nvidia display driver I'm using, I reboot in safe mode, fire up Driver Sweeper, remove the traces of the old driver, start Crap Cleaner and clean up the registry, then reboot normally, and do the install of the new drivers. Never seem to have any issues, although this particular install, the program hung at the Optimus part of the installation, which is at the very end. I just rebooted again, and everything was working fine with the new driver.
-
So I'm having trouble installing these drivers. I'm using the modded inf files, and the installer detects my video cards just fine. The problem is, the installation fails, right at the end of installing the graphics drivers portion. I have no idea what is wrong.
Basically, I'm stuck on the old 257.38 drivers Dell released last year, because that's the last version put up on their website to download for my model. Every time I try to install a driver from Nvidia, the installation fails at some point. It's really frustrating, especially because I can't set up SLI profiles for games with those drivers (or can't figure out how to), and Skyrim really taxes the one card it decides to use.
I really have no idea what I should do at this point.
My specs are: R1, SLI 260m cards. -

Hello, Nick, as usual with every new drivers, you have to remove the old drivers first and reboot before anything.
They install fine for GTX 260M.
-Reboot in Safe Mode (press F8 repeatedly upon reboot) and uninstall PhysX and nVIDIA Display drivers.
-Reboot in Safe Mode once again and run CCleaner and clean your registry until there's noting left to clean
-Reboot normally and give the 290.53 another try with modded inf following the steps above.
Come back and tell us how it went. -
Kat,
It did not work for me regardless. I did some perusing of the Nvidia forums, and this seems to be an issue for a number of people, where the installer is unable to install the Nvidia control panel, exits, and erases whatever it did install.
I went ahead and installed the 270.61 drivers, which seems to be the last driver that didn't have this problem, and those worked fine.
Nvidia also seems to be silent about the issue, which is a bummer.
There are a number of "fixes" that people have come up with, but none have worked for me. Short of a clean install of windows, I'm probably stuck with what I have at the moment unless Nvidia fixes the issue in a later driver version. I'd do a clean install, but I'm at college and frankly don't have the time to reinstall every program that's on my laptop. -

katalin_2003 NBR Spectre Super Moderator
They should, give them a try. But the official drivers have all the 460M IDs so they should install.
-
Also, if in the nVIDIA control panel it says SLI enabled, Im running SLI right?
And i had the PCIe Gen2 thing disabled at driver install, what exactly is this and do i need to put it back on?
Finally, after the drive install windows is telling me it has no drivers for the SM Bus Controller and Coprocessor, what exactly are these and where can i get the drivers for these?
