Hi everyone. I bought an Alienware 18 last year (i7 4700MQ / SLI 770m / 8GB). Unfortunately he had problems, after much discussion they finally agreed to replace my machine, but with a catch, they no longer have the 18 and proposed replacing my 18 by one 17R2.

Within the value of my investment I can choose between two settings:
    - I7 4710HQ / 980m / 8GB RAM / touch / Graphic Amplifiers (empty)
    or
    - I7 4980HQ / 980m / 8GB RAM

    What is the best bet?

From what everyone is saying, if you plan to stay stationary while gaming go with the GA

If you need the mobility option 2

but Id haggle over getting the 16GB of ram, the touch screen and atleast 1 128gb m2 most are reporting sale prices of 17-1800 with that configuration.
Since its their screw up make them give you the 3 year warranty too lol

I'm very polite and honest when I haggle with people and has always worked to get the best price. The line "ok ill order it from another resellar" seems to get the best effect from the reps though.

I would argue for what YOU want. Not let them give you what they want to give you. It's your laptop that you will be using, you paid a premium for your Alienware 18 and they're downgrading you to a 17. Get what YOU want.

    I would (personally) argue for:

    I7 4980HQ / 980m / 16GB RAM / touch / Graphic Amplifiers (empty)

When you get firm with them they tend to "talk to their managers" then they come back and get "special approval" for you. It works with them.

The problem is that I'm from Brazil and I'm fighting since December to get the benefit of the guarantee. Dell Alienware does not sell officially in my country, any part that needs replacement in alienware line has a minimum period of 15 days to give you an idea.
Make a new purchase is something impractical in my current situation, the exchange of my laptop has already been approved because he had problems with the motherboard, so I must proceed with the exchange.

My questions regarding the two configurations is the following: GA and more memory I can buy later, but the processor not ... the 4890 is so superior to 4710 to justify the choice?

The touch screen I think to pay an additional if I stay with the 4890, it is a very welcome upgrade.

    I'd take the 4980HQ and 980M.

This actually makes sense. When I noticed that the 18 was discontinued and the 17 supports only 16GB of RAM and no upgrade possibilities of video and procesador I was disappointed.

I got a call approving the exchange today, I said that it would research what would be the best replacement option. I will argue and see what I can catch.

It should work. The port looks the same.

I'd try to get the 4980HQ, TrueLife display, and 980M. That would be nice.

If possible I sure can do that, I don't know if I can stay with the 17 and the 18 together for some time.

I will set this to the minimum, otherwise I will ask the refund, with the value I can buy a machine from another brand.

    Thank you all for opinion.

Yes. So far they only offer 1080p TrueLife. The 4k displays are expected to hit soon, but there's no specified date.

The TrueLife is truly amazing. It's a great technology. Imagine a glossy display and brighter, crisper screen with minimal glare. Perfect combination. ;)

So does this mean both are TrueLife?

No, I meant "TrueLife" only comes with the 1080p resolution thus far. There's a standard 1080p screen that isn't a TrueLife display.

The 4k display will be TrueLife also.

Yes, as Sam said. As a matter of fact, all of the systems have IPS panels now.

Dell for some reason made my billing address my shipping address after the fact and that address is in a different city. My laptop is waiting. I just sent Dell a screen pic from there 1st confirmation of order. I also told that a 180 watt psu is not enough. I didn't get any discounts or anything. Maybe I can just let it get returned from the shipping company and wait for a better deal and psu that will power it properly? If they email me back and offer me a better deal for my troubles I probably would consider that though. Any input on what you would do?

Based on reports here you'd better return it and make a new purchase. Apparently you can get easy at least a 15% discount.

Looks like the promo is over. I got a 15% as the last coupon I tried to get though. Can't decide if I should buy.

I don't even want an upgraded model. I basically just want the base model plus maybe some warranty would be nice. I'd opt for the touch screen if it wasn't glossy. Want to take a gamble on the matte since I prefer matte.

When you order using your Dell Preferred Account, they are allowed to be much more lenient regarding the prices because, odds are, you'll end up paying interest. I'd definitely recommend calling and asking about deals. Speaking directly to someone is usually more effective than text-chatting.
