I have nine days left until my one year warranty expires. So my question is should I renew for another year or not bother? I have not had any problems with it over this entire year. I read in Laptop Magazine that most problems occur in the first year and to spend any more money on an extended warranty is a waste. Do you agree?

Oh and does anyone know how much an additional year would cost?

    Thanks!

No idea on the cost but having a warranty on a system like that is a must. Even if nothing goes wrong it's peace of mind to know your computer is safe.

That extra bit of insurance for the video card can be worth it, all by itself. I can't even count the number of times I've seen a 2 or 3 year warranty save someone from having to attempt to purchase a $500 video card off eBay, long after both the machine and any compatible video cards for it have gone out of production.

I'm not sure if you can still get something like an 8800 from Dell's parts department, but if you couldn't and needed another one, eBay is STILL selling those things for nearly $600. While it's most certainly a ripoff, what else could you do? At least with the warranty in place, if Dell can't replace the card, they'll do something else.. like give you a nice upgrade.

Nvidia's GPU track record over the last few years doesn't exactly instill confidence for their products.. and sad as it is, the very same thing could happen to ATi/AMD.

i paid 675 just to extend the warranty for two years and I didn't regret it at all. I wish though I had bought it with the laptop, it would have saved me at least 300...

grab it for sure, as many system replacements/upgrades take place in this forum it's a no-brainer. laptops are hot running platforms, espically gaming laptops. given enough time something *will* fail. I think I spent close to $6-800 for my premium 3 year and I have 0 doubt I will get every penny back plus interest within those 3 years.

I just added 2 years to my warranty. GET IT. You will have problems eventually. Its the nature of technology but in the instance the Dell warranty from alienware is very good. Highly Recommended.

I paid $354.60 CDN plus Taxes. 13%. That was supposed to be for 2 years, turned out it was for 1 year. I spoke with Alienware customer support (warranty department) and the person (who had given me a quote for 374 CDN which had expired) extended me to June 16 2012. My original expiration date was September 18th 2010.

    So in case thats confusing.
September 18th 2010 (warranty expires) 2 years remaining.
354 CDN to extend to September 18th 2011
June 16th CS Rep extends to June 2012 (because of previous quote on a NEW system). And the new date of extension (yesterday)

So yes you do pay more to extend but if you receive a replacement system they are very capable of giving you NEW system prices on warranty.

I even have the option to purchase Complete Care at 228 for 2 years (previously quoted 140 but missed out on the 30% off promotion.

Technically speaking I have 3 months after that to apply 3 months of warranty but who knows how this will mess that up. Either way I have warranty now till 2012 for the price of a 1 year extension.

If you are indeed using the machine as a potable device then the accidential damage is a no brainer. Just one drop and the mcahine is fixed, or one spill ...
The cost for my m17x to extend the hardware and add acc. damage was $672 for a new machine only four months old and takes the machine out to 1-2014.
This may seem high but, consider this: If you are truly using the machine as it was intended to be used A MOBILE DEVICE and pack it up at least once a week or even every other week, then the odds are against you that a drop will happen.

You can get a acc. damage and extended warranty for lest time periods, but consider how long you will use the machine.

I have invested a great deal of monies in the machine and I want that covered.
Think of it as a vehicle. You get a warranty on a car for three years 36000 miles.
Do you keep a car over three years? Of course you do because of the investment.
If your car starts having problems that dollar you to death then you sell it or trade it off.

    Use the same philosophy.

I keep my cars till they drop then trade them in or sell.

    Just my thoughts

from what I can see in the contract for the accidental coverage, it basically covers anything, spilt drinks on the keyboard, that chip in the glass LCD screen because the rubber feet on the palm rest are too low? Gone. By Far and away worth it.
