Ok, so the m17X R3 was released here today, barely customisable ( cant downgrade HDD or wireless etc), AND there is no AlienFX colours or customisable nameplate.

Just a bland white keyboard..........?

You will still have access to all of the AlienFX/Command Center options. Just sucks that your regional site does not permit setting a color when configuring. No big deal though.

The nameplate customization is apparently only in the US?

Yea, the nameplate custom seems to be only in US.

As Batboy said colours can be changed when you get the machine.

That's pretty sad that you won't get custom nameplate. It doesn't really add function, but I guess it's fun to have if you think about it. Poor guy. Maybe you can call AW after you receive it and ask them to send/make one for you.

Uthal, as other have already stated, you will get the AlienFX. AW/Dell won't produce a separate line with different hardware just for a Country. It would be just a waste of money for them.

As far as the nameplate goes, same for me (and for a lot of other people that don't live in the US)

By the way, if you don't mind and sorry for the ignorance but.. what OZ stand for?

OZ = Australia. Not sure who coined the term though. I saw it on TopGear first when it was TopGear UK vs. TopGear OZ lolz.

Nope, sadly not, must be US postal address........

Gonna send to family in US, but thinking postage from US to OZ (Yes Australia) might be a killer?

It's MUCH easier and cheaper than you think. I'm ordering one tomorrow through Price USA | Shop where you want. The basic aussie spec is almost $1000 cheaper from the US. Even when you add the import duty. It's sux it cost so much more in OZ especially when our $ is now worth more than the US dollar. Also, Alienware gear has an international warranty.

It cost me $130 to ship from USA to Germany, just to give you a price perspective. Yes, buy from the USA if you can live with the US keyboard layout. You will save "lots."

Ok so whats the deal with price USA. I looked at them, and they seem to add 3-8% of the cost plus shipping, plus subscription. Dunno but that seems a little steep to me. Let me know if i just miss the point?

Mate, when you shipped to Germany, who was it with. What is the size and weight of the Laptop when boxed up?

Yep, you missed the point alright. Regardless of their fees it's still about $1000 off. Who cares what they charge? As long as i'm saving 1k i dont' give a crap. Check out the "Whirlpool" forums and you will see many, many people that have used their service. Shipping only works out at $96 via FedEx. Bugger all mate!

Mate, you may want to call Dell. I'm sure the things you mentioned were options on the Alienware AU site when they first put the R3 back up for order.

The site has definitely changed since the they first re-listed the R3. I suppose 1 of 2 things has occurred:

    1. They mistakenly first listed them as options in AU when they shouldn't have, or

    2. They have forgot to list them as options when they revised the site.

Let us know how you go.

(PS. Could a Mod activate my ability to PM)

dude shipping to Mackay (QLD) works out with a saving of couple of AUD...(600-800 AUD)

    but take into account....
the real saving from the US comes as being able to configure every nitty-gritty detail...as opposed to DELL AU....giving you take it or leave it options (750GB in RAID, 19x10 screen,8GB vs 4GB option, MCAFEE, intel 6300). If you factor in the options that DELL AU forces you to have the price delta b/w US and AU actually shortens to the point the difference is neg. Also...and do not quote me on it...but DELL US says we need to get min. 2yrs warranty to make it applicable in AUS.....Also if you plan to remserv or something...you can cuz the reciept aint in your name...plus the taxes+GST on the border.

PS i have been looking into AW M17XR3 meself for quite a few months...and have talked it over a few times with DELL REPS

Ok, so this is the story:

Ordered on the 8th March. Delivered to my sister in law in Texas on the 31st March. Now is transit between US and Australia, ETA 12th April.

    Shipping cost, ~$155 US.

Warranty confirmed as being international and valid for Australia as standard.

Would i do it this way again, probably, there is a significant saving overall, although if the Australiabn site allowed the "downgrade" of some parts, the difference wouldnt be that great.

Its just a longer wait from start to finish. Oh, and personal plate is defn US only.

Get the machine and get it engraved yourself afterwards.
But beleive me, you won't care if it is or isn't done.
How many times will you have the machine upsidedown to look at it?

I'm about to order my m17x r3 today (I'm from OZ, using the dell.com.au site), there IS a nameplate on the thing apparently, you just can't customize it, I tried to ask the dell rep why and he said it was just something they weren't doing. Hopefully if they DON"T do that, they'll take more time putting my lappy together better without all these other problems I see here on the forums.

And yea it sucks that OZ has to have all these additional things added by default, this spec here is gonna cost me 3k. (after having a 10% discount applied and convincing the dell rep to round it down to 3000.0 exactly saving me another $30~$40.

I know, price is ridiculous, should of ordered from US, but to be honest I just simply don't know how, and don't like the idea of waiting extra time for it.

Edit:Oh and as you can see the AlienFX is on the list, is this what someone asked about?

Just had a look and the custom name plate is now available on the AU Alienware site. They also have an "ask and answer Q&A." Not sure what the deal is with the Q&A.

If you haven't already gotten it, it's now on there, with the ability to customise. I purchased one on the 20th of March. Dell messed me around, so I cancelled my order, and went to re-order it in Nebula Red, and its now got the option.
