No HDMI Audio Output on brand new M17x R3

I don't even have HDMI audio listed in my playback devices. And when I go to device manager, there's no HDMI audio device.

Does this thing not ship with a driver for HDMI audio?

All my drivers are up to date, any ideas?

 

Got AMD HDMI Output on my audio devices. I would suggest you download the latest drivers and see if that fixes it.

Assuming you have the AMD card did you download the FULL package direct from AMD? The other packages may not contain the driver for the audio.

 

Switch to igpu. If you are using the intel one, you wont see it.

Maybe try a reinstallation, mine had an ATI HDMI Output appear the first time I plugged it into the TV. i'm on the 6970m.

When you plug the HDMI cable into your TV/Receiver open your sound properties, the HDMI Audio for your receiver/tv should show up.

I have the same question using my Asus's NVIDIA (not Ati/Amd) Gtx 460M GPU. Even there's no yellow-exclamation mark in device manager and i see Nvidia High Definition Audio in Device Manager, i DO NOT HAVE HDMI Audio device either in Realtek HD Audio Manager or in sound properties in control panel.

Why is that? Is it a defect?

 

You will not see an HDMI audio device until you plug in either an HDMI receiver or an HDTV using an HDMI cable. For eg: I have a 42" LG TV that I use for HD movies. Once the TV is plugged in, my HDMI audio device shows up as 'LG TV'.

From there, I change the default audio device to 'LG TV'. Once it's unplugged, it will default back to the IDT audio device, until the TV is plugged back in. HDMI audio is decoded through the GPU to your HDMI device. It is not a 'sound card' per se.

 

Hi livid and thanks for your response. I have Realtek ALC269 codec and Nvidia GTX 460m, no unknown devices in device manager, all "seems" OK. As you described, i DON'T SEE any such HDMI audio device in my sound properties even Realtek or Nvidia WHILE i have no physical HDMI connection between a HDTV. I only have "Speakers" and "Realtek Digitial Audio". Strangely, i read somewhere the hdmi audio device would show up regardless of the physical hdmi connection. Is that really true or my computer's behaviour is fine?

The behavior is normal for this sort of thing. Nvidia's audio driver is merely an audio decoder driver, not a sound card driver.

 

I'm not at all sure this will help (I'm an R2 guy) - but just to be sure that you're seeing all devices. Open the Sound - Playback - right click in a blank space & the ensure that show all disabled & disconnected devices are both checked (see Pic). That will at least show you that the HDMI exists.

 

I've already done right-clicking and showing hidden/disabled devices. I had no HDMI audio still. As livid stated, it might be due to physical cable disconnection of HDMI cable whilst i'm checking sound dialog, as i stated i just had "Speakers" and "Realtek Digital Audio" output, no HDMI audio device of Realtek or Nvidia. I really wonder if there's a problem or it is normal.

Strangely, some of my friends have HDMI output on their old Nvidia cards (such as 8500GT) on their desktop PCs and seeing HDMI audio device EVENTHOUGH there's no connected device via HDMI.

The IDT HDMI Audio device you see is for HDMI In, not HDMI Out.

Yes. The Nvidia HDMI out is hot-pluggable; Your external video and audio device will only show up once they are plugged in.

Don't quote me on it, but I believe AMD's solution uses a Realtek ALC controller, which shows up all the time.

I'm really confused. Can you decide/verify HDMI Audio Driver installation instead of letting me decide? I see no HDMI Audio line in components tab in system information whereas all the Nvidia HDMI devices seem installed and working OK in device manager. Here is the screenshot:

If the R3 is anything like the R2, the mobile drivers lack the HDMI audio drivers.

Download the full desktop drivers, and unpack the install. In the folder you unpack the install to there should be a Drivers\Modules\WDM folder or something like that. Copy that folder from the desktop package to the mobile package. When you go to install the mobile package the option to install HDMI audio drivers should come up on the checklist.
