Here's the story...this is a 2 week old 17xR4, ATI GPU...I'm still fighting the No sound device found problem just like 90% of the r4 owners...now, this thing
decides it doesn't want to POST. It happens after it has been off, not sleeping, for a little while. I go to start it and all I get is lights, a black screen , and 8 beeps, over
and over again. So then, I pull the power adapter, and the battery and hold down the power button for a bit. Then restart and it will boot, but my home page is
youtube. When the page starts to load...bam, the screen scrambles into a bunch of horizontal lines. Then if I re-boot it seems normal again.

To me it sounds like the screen or video card in this thing is about to die. Between this, and the sound card problem this Alienware is big boat anchor. The only thing I
can depend on working from one minute to the next is the Dell paper weight. I've called Tech Support but all they want to do is run the diagnostics, which won't catch the problem while they
    are logged onto my machine.

    WHAT DO I DO ?

Thanks for any and all suggestions...

    DELL ...Hello...is thing on ?

Hi, if you want to try to find the problem yourself then I suggest you remove the ATI card altogether and see how it runs. If it is all OK then it does look like the GPU but sometimes just removing and reseating can fix a poor connection. PM to follow with more advice ;)

Edit: can't PM you yet, not enough posts I guess?

You know as previous poster says it sounds exactly like a GPU problem or the like .. however have you tried turning enduro off or enduro on? Maybe with or with out the intel card it is fine .. if so this could be driver related but dont quote me on that. Since post is being affected (bios related problems) it could be simply that you have a bad motherboard and the video card could be fine. Just recently I sent in my laptop to dell and they replaced the motherboard when I was having the 8 beeb code.

Well, the machine hasn't failed a POST since yesterday...all of these intermittent problems ( sound device not found, failing post ) sound like a poor connections, except the POST problem seems like maybe
a motherboard issue...as could be the sound problem. I'll open it up and make sure everything is seated firmly and see if that will end the problems. Since this is a reseller machine, maybe they didn't get
everything put back together very well.

    Thanks for your help

Thanks for the link to the Dell support fix..I had already been there, and tried the BIOS reset. At least it hasn't done it since yesterday...maybe it was a fluke. But I'll keep an eye on it. If it fails
to POST again, I think I'll see how Alienware handles it. The dependability of this machine is much worse than any other computer I've had since 1989, and it is the most expensive...Go figure.

If the issue continues send me a PM and I'll take a look into it myself.
