Hey there i am having an issue when I tried to upgrade my gpu I will detailed every single step that I did and the specs that I have and bought.
Specifications:
Alienware 17 r1 (2013)
Windows 10
default gpu: Nvidia gtx 765m
heatsink: 2 pipe heatsink
screen: 120 hz with 3D
integrated graphic card: Not detected by bios
Bios version: A14
Battery: currently dead.
AC: 240W
I bought this thing:
Gpu: Nvidia 980m link:
Heatsink: 5 pipe all copper
Battery replacement: It arrives on the 5th January
So the problem is that after I plug the new gpu my laptop didn’t show anything in the screen, I couldn’t access even to bios. Just nothing can’t seen in the screen, no digital signal.
The steps that I made where:
1° Verify in Bios that UEFI mode was enable, and all the stuffs were disactivated. Windows 8 fast boot was enable as I remember was the only thing that was enable.
2° Download the drivers for 980m.
3° Removed with DDU in safe mode the drivers for the 76m.
4° check that everything was were working.
5° after that I unplugged battery, fan, old heatsink and 765m graphic card.
6° then plugged the new gpu, apply thermal paste fit the new heatsink, fit fan and plug battery again.
After plug the AC to the computer the screen didn’t show anything so I couldn’t be able to check If the graphic card was recognized by the bios. I tried also with HDMI to external monitor and nothing appears.
Then I give up because I thought that it may be possible that could be different reasons why my screen didn’t show anything. Possible things I think that could make this happen:
A) System bios doesn’t support the new graphic card. So when the battery arrives, I would be able to give a try again with the new bios (A16 the actual one) or should I try with a unlocked bios, if I need the unlocked bios can someone explain me a bit where to find it and how to install.
B) I read something about that 120hz with 3D screen doesn’t have an intel graphic card so I can’t run in Optimus mode so the monitor needs a graphic card for the screen recognition.
C) The gpu fan is not blowing too much air I think like the cpu fan, I checked with hwkinfo and diverse programs and sometimes the programs said that cpu fan speed is 0% however the temperature of the old graphic card is max 60°. So is possible that the gpu overheat a bit and the computer doesn’t start up. When I open the laptop after plug the 980m and turned on the heatsink was hot.
D) Last of all but I don’t really know a lot about it is that some users remove the CMOS battery and plug then but I don’t know how is this going to affect it.
So after I failed with the upgrade I decided to see if I could install the old graphic card (765M), so I removed the 980m and installed the 765m with the new heatsink (5 pipe). Luckily it was working perfectly so right now I am using the 765m without temperature problems and I am waiting if someone can help me out a bit or can tell me where to keep reading, I am reading in this forum and tons of places but maybe someone knows what I should do. Thanks for reading this and if you think that I am doing something wrong or missing something tell me please.

You're correct in that you cannot use the iGPU with the 120HZ screen, as it does not support it. That is why it is listed as "Not Avaliable" In this BIOS
